Drawing these two iconic characters together, especially in such a cozy, relaxed pose – one reading a book, the other resting their head on the lap, legs casually draped over the armrest – was quite the artistic adventure. You want to capture their essence, their expressions, and that undeniable bond they share. For this particular pencil sketch, I really focused on conveying their relaxed friendship. Getting the anatomy right when you have two figures interacting so closely, especially with one in a more reclined position, definitely took some careful planning and a lot of erasing! It's one thing to sketch a single person, but trying to get the proportions and overlap correct for two characters on a single chair, making it feel natural and lived-in, is a whole different ball game. I spent a good amount of time just blocking out their shapes to ensure they fit comfortably within the frame. Speaking of erasing, I have to give a huge shout-out to my friend who gave me some invaluable constructive criticism. You know that feeling when you've been staring at a drawing for so long you can't see its flaws anymore? That's where a fresh pair of eyes comes in! She pointed out some areas where the proportions and details needed tweaking, and honestly, her handwritten annotations and arrows on my draft were a game-changer. It helped me refine the angles, adjust the tilt of Moony's head, and ensure Padfoot's legs looked natural while draped over the armrest. It felt like I redrew it at least three times, but every single redraw was worth it to get it just right. Without her keen eye, I probably would’ve missed those subtle shifts that make the difference between a good drawing and one that truly resonates. For any fellow artists out there trying to draw their favorite characters, my biggest advice is to embrace the critique! It’s not always easy to hear, but it pushes you to improve. Also, gather plenty of visual references – not just of the characters themselves, but of people in similar poses, or even specific items like the book or the chair. Don't be afraid to take photos of yourself or a friend in the pose you're trying to draw; it helps immensely with accuracy and understanding how light and shadow fall.
