How To Know What A Bible Verse Means

Have you ever read a Bible verse and wondered, “What does this actually mean?”

Many misunderstandings happen when verses are read without context or isolated from the rest of Scripture. This visual storyboard teaches a biblical approach to understanding God’s Word by letting Scripture interpret Scripture.

📖 Inside this study you’ll learn how to:

✨ Read verses in their proper context

✨ Ask the right questions when studying

✨ Understand key words and meanings

✨ Compare Scripture with Scripture

✨ Avoid common interpretation mistakes

✨ Apply God’s truth faithfully to your life

This resource is perfect for:

📚 Personal Bible study

📚 Bible journaling

📚 Homeschool Bible lessons

📚 New believers

📚 Small group studies

📚 Christian discipleship

Key Scriptures featured include:

📖 2 Timothy 2:15

📖 James 1:5

📖 Acts 17:11

📖 John 5:39

📖 1 Corinthians 2:13

📖 2 Peter 1:20-21

📖 James 1:22

📖 Psalm 119:105

One of the most important principles of Bible study is that God’s Word was never intended to be interpreted according to personal opinion. Understanding Scripture requires prayer, context, careful study, and humility before God’s truth.

📖 The goal is not simply to know what a verse says, but to understand what God intended to communicate through it and how it applies to our lives today.

📚 Every Drawn By Scripture storyboard includes Bible references throughout the design so you can study directly from Scripture and verify every detail for yourself.

🤎 As always, these visual resources are not founded on my own understanding, opinions, or traditions. Every board is built directly from God’s Word, with Scripture references included throughout so that the Bible remains the authority and the proof.

... Read moreOne of the key challenges in Bible study is not just reading the words, but truly grasping what God intended to communicate through them. From my personal experience, a methodical approach can make all the difference. First, always start with prayer, asking God to open your heart and mind to His truth. Then, read the verse carefully within its full context—this means looking at the surrounding passages, the chapter, and even the entire book to understand the original meaning. One effective technique I’ve used is to identify the historical and cultural background of the passage. For example, knowing who the original audience was, what challenges they faced, and what customs influenced their understanding helps reveal deeper insights. Theological context is just as important, which is why comparing Scripture with Scripture is highly beneficial. If a verse seems confusing or contradictory, look for other passages that speak about the same topic to get a clearer picture. I also find it helpful to examine key words in the original languages when possible. Tools like concordances, interlinear Bibles, and Bible dictionaries aid in uncovering nuances of words that can shift the meaning. Avoid letting personal opinions or emotions interpret the text; instead, let the Bible interpret itself, ensuring that your understanding aligns with the overall teaching of Scripture. Finally, the aim is not merely intellectual knowledge but application—how does this verse impact how I live, love, and serve? Applying God’s Word transforms lives, equipping us with strength, wisdom, and encouragement. For example, 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds me that God has given us a spirit of power and love, not fear. Keeping such truths at the forefront has helped me face daily challenges with courage and faith. Studying Scripture carefully and prayerfully is a lifelong journey. Patience and humility are essential virtues in this process. As the Bible says, "No prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation" (2 Peter 1:20). Trusting God's Word and allowing it to guide every aspect of your life brings true understanding and spiritual growth.
