South Korea Travel Tips 🇰🇷

South Korea has been booming for entertainment and beauty. Tourism has also been increasing as visitors has been increasing by the year. So if this is your first time visiting, here are some things to consider when visiting:

- Credit cards are taken at most places — even Amex! Tbh, I used my Amex for most of the trip and never had a problem paying for anything. Plus, there are no additional foreign transactions!

- Everyone minds their own business and will mostly not even acknowledge you. Even if you leave your phone out in the open, it will most likely be there in 24 hours (people seriously will not bother you)

- A lotttt of locals don’t really like foreigners (from personal experience), so don’t get offended if someone gives you a dirty stare. I hope this gets better in the future, but it is what it is!

South Korea
2024/8/7 Edited to

... Read moreAs a first-timer heading to South Korea, I quickly learned that while some things are straightforward, a few insider tips can make your trip so much smoother and more enjoyable. Beyond the basics, here’s what I personally found incredibly helpful and wish I knew before I went! Getting Around Like a Local: Transportation Made Easy Navigating Seoul’s extensive subway system was surprisingly easy, even for someone who’s usually directionally challenged like me. My absolute top tip is to grab a T-Money card as soon as you arrive, usually available at convenience stores like GS25 or 7-Eleven. This rechargeable card works on all subways and buses, saving you from fumbling with cash or single-use tickets. Just tap and go! I found that using a navigation app like KakaoMap or Naver Map (Google Maps has limited public transport info in Korea) in conjunction with my T-Money card made getting to iconic spots like a traditional Korean palace or exploring different districts a breeze. For late nights or when carrying lots of shopping, taxis are also readily available and quite affordable, especially if you're splitting the fare with travel companions. The Kakao T app is fantastic for hailing a cab if you prefer to avoid street-hailing. Staying Connected: Your Digital Lifeline Having reliable internet access is non-negotiable for a first-time visitor. From navigating unfamiliar streets to looking up restaurant reviews or translating menus, a good data plan is your best friend. I opted for an eSIM before my trip, which meant I had connectivity the moment I landed without fussing with physical SIM cards. Public Wi-Fi is available in many places, especially in cafes and subway stations, but having your own data ensures you’re always connected, whether you're exploring the bustling city and mountains views or finding your way through a charming, colorful coastal town like Busan. It really made a difference in feeling confident and independent while exploring. Food Adventures: A Taste of Korea Korean food is an absolute highlight, and don’t be shy about trying everything! Beyond the popular BBQ, I personally fell in love with street food like tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and odeng (fish cakes on a skewer). For a more traditional experience, I sought out local eateries for dishes like bibimbap, kimchi jjigae, and the comforting flavors of samgyetang. My advice: don't be afraid to venture into smaller, less flashy restaurants – these often offer the most authentic and delicious meals. If you see a line of locals, it’s usually a good sign! Learning a few basic phrases like 'Juseyo' (please give me) and 'Kamsahamnida' (thank you) can enhance your ordering experience, though many menus in tourist areas have English translations or pictures. Beyond the Stare: Understanding Cultural Nuances While the original post mentioned that some locals might seem reserved or keep to themselves, I learned that this often stems from a deep respect for personal space and privacy, rather than any personal dislike. In crowded places like subways or a quiet modern library, people generally maintain quiet and avoid direct eye contact. I found that a polite bow or a simple 'Annyeonghaseyo' coupled with a friendly smile, even if not always reciprocated with effusiveness, was always appreciated. Remember to take off your shoes when entering homes, some restaurants, and temples. This small act of respect goes a long way in showing you appreciate their customs. My personal experience was that while interactions might be brief, they are usually polite and efficient, reflecting a culture that values harmony and order. Embrace these differences, and your first-time adventure in South Korea will be truly enriching!
