Top Free Things to Do in NYC (part 2)
We're moving towards Lower Manhattan into Brooklyn on exploring free things to do in NYC! Here's my other recommend things to do for an afternoon adventure:
- Take a ferry over to Staten Island: yes, this ferry is absolutely free! The ferry runs to and from the port over to Staten Island every half hour. It's a double decker with seats both upstairs and downstairs (first come first serve). Try to make it for golden hour - it's a beautiful sight!
- Explore Brooklyn Bridge Park: from a number of view points, photography spots, and a carousel ride, visiting BBP is one for the books. There's also the Time Out Market to dine in at after exploring.
- Dumbo: my favorite time to visit Dumbo is on Saturdays as you'll find pop up markets supporting small and local businesses. It's a cute little area to explore after visiting places like Brooklyn Bridge Park

New York City is known for its iconic landmarks and vibrant atmosphere, but exploring on a budget is entirely possible. The Staten Island Ferry provides not only a free means of transport but also breathtaking views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. As you board this double-decker ferry, securing a spot on the upper deck is essential for the best views, especially during the golden hour when everything is bathed in soft light. After your ferry ride, Brooklyn Bridge Park awaits. This expansive green space along the East River offers much more than just scenic views. With opportunities for photography, landscape gazing, and even a carousel ride, it's an ideal spot for both relaxation and recreation. Dining at the Time Out Market within the park lets visitors enjoy delicious food while taking in the stunning surroundings. Lastly, don't miss Dumbo, particularly on Saturdays when pop-up markets showcase local artisans and small businesses. This trendy area, nestled between the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges, is perfect for a leisurely stroll, boasting picturesque views and a charming vibe. Whether it's capturing those Instagram-worthy shots or finding unique souvenirs, Dumbo is a must-visit as you explore the free offerings of NYC.
