How can I start writing a book?
I have had this story in my head for the longest time but every time, I try to write it the words won’t come. My mind goes completely blank.
I have tried a lot of things to make let myself write but it doesn’t work and I don’t know what else to do.
Any advice is very much appreciated.
Oh, I completely get how you feel! That frustrating blank page, the story swirling in your head but just refusing to come out – I’ve been there so many times. It's like your brain just hits a wall, right? For the longest time, I thought I just wasn't cut out for writing a book because I’d sit down and nothing would happen. But then I realized, sometimes you just need the right tools and a little shift in your approach, especially when you're writing on a screen. One of the biggest game-changers for me was exploring various writing apps. You mentioned stary writing app in your thoughts, and honestly, that’s a fantastic starting point for many! Apps like Stary Writing are brilliant because they often come with built-in prompts, organizational tools, and even community features that can spark inspiration and keep you accountable. I found that having a structured environment, even a digital one, helped me break down the overwhelming task of "writing a book" into manageable steps. It's not just about typing; it's about organizing your thoughts, characters, and plot points. Beyond Stary, there are so many other digital tools that can really make a difference. For outlining and brainstorming, I love using mind-mapping apps or even just a simple note-taking app like Evernote. When it comes to drafting, I often switch between Google Docs for its accessibility and collaboration features, and sometimes a more dedicated word processor with a distraction-free mode. The key is to find what feels comfortable and intuitive for *you*. Now, let's talk about the dreaded writing screen. Staring at a bright, empty screen can be intimidating. Here are a few things I've learned that make a huge difference: Minimize Distractions: Your computer screen is a portal to everything! I always use a full-screen writing mode or a dedicated app that blocks out notifications and other tabs. It creates a 'digital sanctuary' for your words. Comfort and Ergonomics: Make sure your setup is comfortable. Adjust your chair, screen height, and take regular breaks. A comfortable body allows a more comfortable mind to write. I use the Pomodoro Technique often – 25 minutes of focused writing, 5 minutes break. Outline Digitally: Before I even start writing prose, I’ll often create a detailed outline right there on my screen. Having bullet points or a scene-by-scene breakdown staring back at me makes it less daunting than a completely blank page. Embrace the Messy First Draft: Don't edit as you go! Just get the words out. The beauty of writing on a screen is how easy it is to go back and revise. Don't let perfectionism stop you at the beginning. And for inspiration, I sometimes hop onto platforms like WEBTOON or even scroll through Goodreads to see what others are reading or publishing. It reminds me of the vibrant world of stories out there and fuels my own creativity. Remember, every published author started exactly where you are now – with an idea and a blank page (or screen!). Don't give up; your story deserves to be told. Just keep experimenting with tools and techniques until you find your flow!
