What I bring in a 12h Shift!
I usually work two twelves a week so here is what I bring with me!!! I also ofc have my badge and pens and I will also purchase a salad for my actual lunch :)
What kind of work do you do? I’m a PCT at a local hospital!
Surviving a 12-hour shift as a PCT isn't just about showing up – it's about smart preparation! I've had my fair share of trial and error figuring out what truly helps me stay on my game. Beyond the badge and pens, what's in my bag is my secret weapon against fatigue and hunger. Let me dive deeper into why these items are my non-negotiables! Fueling Up Right: Strategic Snacking for Sustained Energy Working long hospital shifts demands sustained energy, and that starts with what I eat. My choices are always geared towards balancing quick boosts with lasting fullness to avoid the dreaded mid-shift slump. Protein Powerhouses: My chocolate protein shake isn't just a treat; it's crucial for sustained energy and muscle support. Pair that with the savory brown sugar turkey sausage bites and natural sharp cheddar cheese from my snack packs, and I ensure I'm getting enough quality protein. This combination keeps me feeling full and focused, making a huge difference between a productive shift and feeling completely drained. Quick & Nutritious: My acai bowl is a lifesaver for a quick, refreshing, and nutrient-dense meal when time is tight. It’s easy to eat, packed with antioxidants, and provides a natural energy boost without weighing me down. It’s the perfect pick-me-up when I need something light but substantial. Strategic Energy Boost: That cherry slush energy drink is my carefully selected pick-me-up for those moments I need a quick, targeted boost without the jitters. It’s about knowing when and how to use it effectively – not just chugging caffeine all day, but strategically using it to power through the most demanding parts of my shift. Beyond Food: Hydration, Comfort, and Mental Breaks It's not all about snacks; staying hydrated and taking care of my mental well-being is just as vital. Stay Hydrated: While the energy drink has its place, I also always pack a large water bottle. Staying hydrated is paramount to fighting fatigue and maintaining mental clarity, especially when constantly on the move in a busy hospital environment. Little sips throughout the shift make a huge difference. A Moment of Escape: My Kindle e-reader is probably the most underrated item in my bag. During a quick break, diving into a story (even with a 'SPOILER WARNING'!) offers a mental escape and helps me recharge, even if just for a few minutes. It's a small but mighty tool for self-care, allowing me to momentarily step away from the intensity of work. Smart Packing & Beyond: Tips for Your Next Long Shift The Right Lunch Bag: My floral lunch bag isn't just cute; it's practical! Having a well-insulated bag keeps everything fresh, which is essential for food safety and enjoyment over a long shift. Consider one with multiple compartments to keep snacks separate from your main meal and prevent squishing. More Than Just Food: Think about other small comfort items that can make your shift a little better – maybe a small hand lotion for dry hands, a soothing lip balm, or even a favorite tea bag. These tiny luxuries can make a big difference in boosting your mood and making you feel a bit more human during those long hours. Listen to Your Body: Ultimately, surviving a 12-hour shift is about listening to your body. Plan your meals and snacks, take those mini-breaks when you can, and don't underestimate the power of a good night's sleep before your shift. Being prepared mentally and physically is key to not just surviving, but truly thriving, through every demanding day.
