HEALTHY BOUNDARIES FOR LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS

1. No hanging out with friends of the opposite sex ALONE.

In our opinion, when you’re in a monogamous relationship, there is no reason why you should be hanging out with a person of the opposite sex alone. In a group setting it is fine, but we both find it a little suss if all of a sudden we start talking to a person of the opposite sex and want to hang out with them alone. Of course, each situation is different, so we assess each one at a time. However, in general, I haven’t been in a friendship with a person of the opposite sex where they didn’t try to make a pass at me at some point in our friendship…

2. No lying (about anything)

In our opinion, trust is what builds the foundation to a long-term, successful relationship. For us, honesty is something that we both value deeply. If our partner is constantly lying about little things that don’t seem worth it to lie about, then we both feel unstable in our relationship knowing that they could be hiding so much more.

3. Communicating only when we are both READY

Arguments are natural and a healthy part of all relationships… don’t be fooled by people telling you that it’s unhealthy to argue. Sure; it’s unhealthy to argue all the time, but it’s good to each have your own opinions about things in life as well. Although arguments are natural, we try to cool down and collect our thoughts before we talk to make sure we don’t say anything we don’t mean. That means, if one person doesn’t want to talk yet, then the conversation isn’t happening until both parties are ready.

One key aspect is managing interactions with friends of the opposite sex; setting guidelines can prevent misunderstandings and jealousy. Moreover, open communication is vital. Couples should prioritize discussing their feelings and concerns, especially when disagreements arise. This means taking time to cool off and approach discussions when both parties are ready, ensuring that conversations remain constructive and respectful. Honesty forms the cornerstone of trust. Dealing with lies or deceit can complicate relationships, leading to doubt and insecurity. Establishing a no-tolerance policy towards dishonesty can strengthen the bond between partners. In addition, couples may consider exploring professional resources such as relationship coaching or counseling to further enhance their connection and improve communication skills. As both individuals learn and adapt, they build a resilient partnership capable of weathering challenges together.
