... Read moreMaking a perfect cheesesteak at home can be a rewarding experience, especially when you add a personal twist like Grandma’s special sauce. Using shaved beef is key because it cooks quickly and stays tender, allowing the cheese to melt perfectly over it. I recommend sourcing high-quality American cheese slices – Land O’ Lakes is a great choice for that creamy, gooey texture classic to cheesesteaks. I’ve found that toasting the rolls at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for a few minutes helps to add a satisfying crunch without drying them out. This simple step really elevates the sandwich’s overall mouthfeel. For the sauce, mixing ketchup with Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, and garlic seasonings creates a nice balance of sweet, tangy, and spicy flavors that complement the rich beef and cheese. In my experience, simmering the sauce for about five minutes lets the flavors meld beautifully. Feel free to adjust the chili powder and black pepper levels to suit your heat preference. While the original recipe suggests skipping onions and peppers, I personally like to sauté some thinly sliced onions and bell peppers with the beef for added sweetness and crunch – it’s a tasty enhancement that many enjoy. This recipe yields two hearty sandwiches, making it ideal for a quick dinner or lunch. The leftover sauce also works wonderfully as a dip, adding extra flavor with every bite. Overall, Grandma’s Cheesesteaks offer a nostalgic, homemade spin on a beloved classic that’s easy to make and full of comforting flavors. Give it a try and customize it to your taste – it’s a versatile recipe that never fails to satisfy!
