BJJ OR WRESTLING?

Having trained in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and wrestling, I’ve found that each discipline offers unique benefits and challenges that appeal to different types of practitioners. Wrestling is all about controlling opponents through takedowns, pressure, and dominant positioning, which builds incredible strength, explosiveness, and stamina. The intensity of live wrestling matches also develops unmatched mental toughness. On the other hand, BJJ focuses more on submission grappling and positional strategy, emphasizing technique over brute strength. It’s excellent for those who prefer a technical and cerebral approach to combat sports, as it requires patience, precision, and adaptability on the ground. Many practitioners appreciate how BJJ also incorporates self-defense elements. When deciding which is better, consider your personal goals. If you want to compete in MMA or improve physical fitness with high-intensity drills, wrestling might be ideal. For those interested in ground fighting, submissions, and a sport that can be practiced safely at various ages, BJJ could be more suitable. From my experience, cross-training both can be exceptionally beneficial. Wrestling develops strong takedown and control skills that complement BJJ’s submission techniques, creating a well-rounded grappler. Ultimately, the best martial art depends on what excites and motivates you to keep learning and growing.
