Every Filipino in America has been through this 🤣

When I was a young man living and hustling in the DC area, I walked into a subway. the man behind the counter starts speaking Spanish to me. "oh, sorry, I don't speak spanish". Why did this man tell me "shame on you! you should know your language". I said "bruh I'm filipino" he went 🫥 after that.

... Read moreThat moment of being mistaken for something else, or getting those curious 'What are you?' questions, is something almost every Filipino in America can deeply relate to. It's more than just a funny anecdote; it's a part of our unique identity journey. I've heard countless stories, and experienced many myself, where people are genuinely surprised when I say, 'Oh, I'm Filipino!' because 'honestly, you don't look like' what they expect. It’s as if there’s a single mold for what a Filipino should appear to be, or that our heritage isn't something to be proud of unless it fits a narrow perception. But the reality of being Filipino is so much richer and more diverse than any stereotype. We come in all shades, from various islands like Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, each with its own customs, languages, and regional cuisines. This beautiful mosaic is what truly defines us. And when people ask, 'what kind of food do you guys eat?', I always smile. Of course, a popular one is adobo – a dish that brings comfort and reminds us of home, but our culinary landscape is vast and incredibly flavorful, reflecting centuries of history and influence from Spanish, Chinese, and Malay traditions. It’s a feast for the senses, much like our culture. Beyond appearances and delicious food, our culture is deeply rooted in strong Filipino values. Family (pamilya) is at the heart of everything; it's our foundation. We value respect for elders (pagmamano), a deep sense of community and mutual help (bayanihan), unwavering hospitality (pakikisama), and incredible resilience (tiyaga) in the face of challenges. These aren't just words; they're the living threads that weave our communities together, whether we're in the bustling cities of the Philippines or building new lives abroad in places like the DC area. And speaking of our community, the strength and spirit of Filipinas, our women, are truly remarkable. They are often the vibrant pillars of their families, incredibly hardworking, nurturing, and beautiful both inside and out, embodying grace and determination. They contribute immensely to our culture and society, often while navigating the complexities of identity themselves. Being Filipino means carrying a legacy of warmth, strength, and an unwavering sense of belonging, no matter where you are in the world. It's an amazing feeling to embrace this identity, with all its nuances and the curious questions that sometimes come with it. It's a constant reminder of our unique heritage and the bonds that connect us all.
