... Read moreMy furry best friend, a beautiful golden retriever, has truly outdone herself lately. It seems the 'Squirrel Chronicles' are indeed continuing, but with a new, very enthusiastic chapter: she's officially become a squirrel dog! It started subtly, a curious glance here, a quick chase there, but now her dedication to these backyard invaders is undeniable. So, what exactly makes a dog a "squirrel dog"? It's generally a term of endearment for canines with a strong prey drive geared specifically towards squirrels. While some breeds like certain terriers or curs are traditionally bred for hunting small game and excel at treeing squirrels, many dogs, including my golden, can develop this hilarious obsession. For my girl, it manifests as intense focus, ears perked, a low growl, and then a sudden burst of speed. She'll chase them up trees, bark at the base, and sometimes even try to dig at their escape routes. It's pure, unadulterated canine joy (and a bit of frustration for her when they get away!). Having a squirrel dog brings its own set of unique experiences. On one hand, it's incredibly entertaining to watch her pursue her bushy-tailed nemeses with such gusto. Her tail wags furiously, and her whole body wiggles with excitement. On the other hand, it means being extra vigilant during walks. That sudden dart across the yard or lunge towards a tree can be quite a pull on the leash! We've been working on her recall and 'leave it' command, which are essential for her safety and my peace of mind. While she's certainly not a professionally trained hunting dog, her natural instincts are strong. I've learned to channel some of that energy into other activities, like fetch or puzzle toys, to keep her mentally and physically stimulated. It’s also made me appreciate the sheer determination and focus dogs can have when something truly captures their attention. It's a reminder of their wilder side peeking through the domesticated exterior. If your dog also has a similar passion for chasing squirrels, you know the joy and the occasional challenge it brings. It's all part of the wonderful adventure of living with our amazing canine companions!
