Crianza Respetuosa vrs Permisiva 🌸

📖 Proverbios 13:24 – “El que ama, desde temprano corrige.”

... Read moreWhen I first started my parenting journey, like many new moms, I often heard terms like 'respectful parenting' tossed around. Initially, I worried that it meant letting my child *permitirlo todo*, giving in to every demand. But through experience and a lot of learning, I've come to understand that respectful parenting is anything but permissive. It’s about building a foundation of educación rooted in love, firmness, and profound respect for the individual your child is becoming. For me, the biggest misconception was confusing respect with a lack of boundaries. True respectful parenting is actually built on clear, consistent *límites con amor y firmeza*. It means saying 'no' when necessary, not just because I'm the adult, but because I’m guiding them towards safety, responsibility, and understanding the world around them. For example, if my child wants to play with a fragile item, instead of just snatching it away, I might say, 'That's not for playing, it could break. Let's find something safe to play with together,' actively redirecting and *enseñar con amor y ejemplo*. A key aspect I’ve embraced is the power of communication, especially when *si tu niño hizo algo inadecuado*. Instead of resorting to yelling or shaming, I strive to *escuchar, corregir sin humillar y guiar sin gritar*. It’s challenging, I won't lie! There are days when my patience wears thin. But I've seen firsthand the difference it makes when I get down to their level, acknowledge their feelings ('I see you’re upset because you can’t have that'), and then gently explain why certain actions aren't okay and what they can do differently next time. This approach fosters a sense of trust and helps them learn from their mistakes without feeling diminished. On the flip side, I've observed families where la creencia permisiva seems to dominate. While it might seem easier in the short term to avoid conflict and *permiten todo*, I've noticed children in such environments often struggle with self-regulation, empathy, and understanding social cues. They might lack the internal compass that healthy boundaries provide. It’s not about being harsh; it’s about providing a clear framework within which they can feel secure and explore. Finding the equilibrio between loving guidance and firm boundaries is an ongoing process. It’s not a destination but a continuous journey of learning and adapting. Every child is different, and what works for one might need tweaking for another. I constantly seek sabiduría – sometimes from books, sometimes from other experienced parents, and often through quiet reflection and prayer. It’s about being present, observing, and understanding what my children truly need, not just what they want in the moment. This approach to parenting, one that blends love, limits, and wisdom, has truly transformed our home into a space where everyone feels respected, heard, and supported to grow.
