Real Talk: Mourning 😞
January 31, 2024 became the worst day ever. I lost my best friend, my childhood dog, especially my first and only dog! I’m glad that he didn’t die alone, with my parents by his side as he sighed his last breath. I miss AJ every day.
It was also the day that my partner’s grandma’s funeral was held. After saying goodbye to AJ, I took a ride straight to the funeral in time for the luncheon. I tried to hold my composure and interact with family members.
I went back to classes a few days after. And I thought I would recover.
On February 9, I lost another family member who I considered to be my aunt. It just happened suddenly. A week later, I visited my parents on the day of the funeral. I saw that AJ was back home in his wooden urn. We have his paw print on ceramic and his ashes in keychains. I got AJ’s ashes in this bronze necklace, which I wore to the funeral. My aunt loved seeing AJ whenever my parents would hang outside the garage.
I still have not fully recovered. I am struggling to catch up on assignments. I am strong enough to attend on campus and see my friends. I am still here. I am alive. 🩷🩷🩷
Grief is a profoundly personal experience that can vary greatly from person to person. After losing a cherished pet and a family member, many find themselves navigating a complex emotional landscape. It's essential to allow oneself to mourn, recognize the pain of loss, and seek support from friends and family during difficult times. Coping with grief involves acknowledging the deep bond shared with those we've lost. Many find solace in creating memorials, whether through physical items, such as ashes or paw prints, or through shared memories that keep the spirit alive. Embracing vulnerability during such times can lead to stronger connections with others who may be facing similar challenges. This shared journey can often transform sorrow into a collective celebration of life. Lastly, it's crucial to remember that healing doesn't happen overnight. It’s normal to struggle with everyday tasks and emotions when grieving. Creating a support network and permitting oneself to feel the range of emotions is vital. This journey through grief shows that while love and loss are intertwined, the memories and lessons learned can provide comfort and strength moving forward.
