Hiking at Flanners Beach

Mom and I went hiking at flanners beach today. She invited her friend and since there has been rain recently I found several mushrooms. My favorite find of the day was the cauliflower mushroom (Sparassis spathulata) that looks like egg noodles. It’s a choice edible mushroom and even tho the two bunches I found were fresh enough to harvest I didn’t have a knife or basket so I left them for the wildlife. #summerdiary #lemon8contest #mushroomforaging #mushroomsinwild #wildmushrooms #natureadventures #healthylifestyle2024 #hiking #momanddaughterduo #enjoynature

Read moreAfter my recent hike at Flanners Beach in Croatan National Forest, where I spotted so many incredible fungi, I wanted to share a few more thoughts and tips for anyone interested in combining hiking with a bit of wild mushroom discovery! Finding that beautiful creamy-white cauliflower mushroom, with its ruffled, noodle-like folds, was truly the highlight! It reminded me how exciting mushroom foraging can be. But remember: safety is paramount. Never consume a mushroom unless you are 100% certain of its identification by an expert. It’s always smart to go with an experienced guide when you're starting out. Also, carrying a proper basket for airflow and a small knife for clean cuts, unlike my unprepared adventure, is crucial for ethical harvesting. Leaving some for wildlife is also key, as these fungi play a vital role in the ecosystem. After a good rain, like we had, is really the best time to spot them! While the cauliflower mushroom stole the show, the forest floor at Flanners Beach was a treasure trove of diversity. We saw robust shelf fungi with their intricate concentric brown and white patterns growing on mossy, fallen logs. There were also vibrant orange, fan-shaped mushrooms, and some charming yellow mushrooms with thick, bulbous stems and rounded caps peeking from under pine needles. Even a curious mushroom with a reddish-brown cap and a yellow, striped stem caught my eye! It's amazing to see the variety, from delicate white star-shaped flowers on the forest floor to these bolder fungal structures. Speaking of preparedness, having the right gear makes all the difference for enjoying a day at a place like Flanners Beach Day Use Area. Good sturdy shoes are a must, and hiking poles, like the ones my family and I often use, really help on uneven terrain. Always pack plenty of water, especially during warmer months. Remember to check the rules and maps at the trailhead, often found on information signs. It’s all about leaving no trace and respecting the natural beauty of places like Croatan National Forest. The shaded dirt paths, surrounded by lush greenery, make for such a peaceful experience. Ultimately, these nature adventures are about more than just finding cool things; they’re about the experience itself. The fresh air, the quiet rustle of leaves, the unexpected discoveries – it all contributes to a healthier lifestyle and a deeper appreciation for our planet. So next time you’re near a beautiful spot like Flanners Beach, grab a friend or family, and see what wonders await!
