YardHouse
Okay, so I finally made it to Yard House for dinner last night, and you know I had to try their famous Kung Pao Calamari! I've seen it pop up on so many 'must-try appetizers' lists, and my curiosity was through the roof. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint, but I have some thoughts to share with anyone else thinking of ordering it. First off, when it arrived, the presentation was really inviting. It wasn't just a pile of fried calamari; it was beautifully arranged with vibrant red peppers and green onions, glistening with that signature Kung Pao sauce. The aroma was a delightful mix of savory, slightly sweet, and a hint of that spicy kick that gets your taste buds ready. Now, for the main event: the taste! The calamari itself was perfectly cooked – tender on the inside with a light, crispy coating on the outside. No rubbery texture here, which is always a win in my book. What truly elevates this dish is the Kung Pao sauce. It’s got that classic sweet, sour, and savory profile, but with a fantastic depth of flavor. You get the richness of the soy, a touch of sweetness, and then a gradual build-up of heat from the dried chilies. It’s definitely spicier than your average appetizer, but it's a pleasant warmth, not an overwhelming inferno. If you're a fan of a medium spice level, you'll absolutely love this. I particularly enjoyed the crunch from the roasted peanuts and the freshness of the bell peppers and scallions scattered throughout. They add a wonderful textural contrast to the soft calamari. The portion size was generous for an appetizer. My friend and I shared it, and it was plenty for two people to get a good few bites each without feeling too full before our main courses arrived. It makes for a perfect starter if you're dining with a group, as there's enough to go around. What I really appreciated was how well-balanced the flavors were. Sometimes Kung Pao dishes can be overly sweet or too salty, but Yard House really nailed it. It felt like a gourmet take on a classic Asian-inspired dish. It’s definitely a step up from your typical fried calamari with marinara sauce. If you’re heading to Yard House and looking for something beyond the usual, the Kung Pao Calamari is a fantastic choice. It’s flavorful, has a delightful kick, and the calamari is cooked to perfection. I’d highly recommend pairing it with one of their lighter, crisp beers to balance out the richness and spice. Or, if you prefer, a refreshing non-alcoholic lemonade would also be a great palate cleanser. It’s an appetizer that genuinely stands out and one I’ll be ordering again on my next visit. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you!
