AskDerm: What ingredients should I avoid for oily skin?
I usually purchase skincare that’s already made for oily skin but I’m wondering if I’m missing something. Especially during summer, the oil just builds up without me even sweating.
Are there any skincare ingredients that I should be watching out for and avoiding in my skincare products?
Are there any ingredients that have helped you control oily skin through the day?

From my personal experience managing oily skin, especially in hot and humid weather, the key is choosing the right products with ingredients that do not clog pores or stimulate more oil production. For instance, I avoid heavy oils like coconut oil and mineral oil, which can exacerbate shine and lead to breakouts. Instead, I look for non-comedogenic ingredients. One ingredient that many with oily skin should watch out for is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), often found in cleansers. SLS strips natural oils aggressively, leading the skin to produce even more oil as a defense mechanism. This can result in a greasy feeling shortly after washing your face. Instead, I prefer gentler surfactants like sodium cocoyl isethionate. Alcohol-based toners seem tempting because they provide a quick matte finish, but they can be too harsh and cause dryness that triggers more oil production. Instead, I turn to products with niacinamide, which helps regulate oil secretion without dehydrating the skin. It also reduces redness and improves skin texture. Another helpful ingredient is salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid that exfoliates inside the pores and helps prevent clogging. I have found that incorporating a salicylic acid serum or toner into my routine helps control oil buildup and reduces the frequency of breakouts. Avoiding heavy emollients like lanolin and certain silicones is also beneficial. While silicones provide a smooth finish, overuse can trap dirt and oil over time, aggravating oily skin conditions. Overall, I recommend looking for lightweight, oil-free, and non-comedogenic labels on skincare products. Using mattifying primers or oil-absorbing powders can also help maintain a shine-free appearance throughout the day, especially in warm weather. Protecting your skin with a broad-spectrum, oil-free sunscreen is crucial to prevent damage without adding extra greasiness. Understanding your skin’s needs and carefully reading ingredient lists can dramatically improve how your skin feels and looks. Everyone’s skin reacts differently, so experimenting with these ingredient suggestions may help you find the perfect balance for controlling oily skin effectively.

Hiii girlypop, I’m an esthetician! You don’t have to avoid oils just because you have oily skin. Sebum is normal! It’s influenced by genetics, hormones, and climate. Some oils can work well for oily skin it just depends on the formulation. I wouldn’t focus on what to avoid. Salicylic acid can be great for oily/congested skin since it works within the pore, but I saw in the comments you think you’ve over-exfoliated, I’d focus on your barrier first before adding more exfoliation. Also make sure to wear sunscreen (: Since I don’t have enough information about your skin specifically I don’t want to recommend something that will do more harm than good. This is just a general recommendation. ✨ happy cleansing 🫧
