AskDerm: Can dark spots become darker because of skincare?
This is a skincare question I haven’t seen asked or seen any information on. We always see products to get rid of dark spots but is it possible for skincare products to darken your dark spots or make them bigger?
In my experience dealing with dark spots, it's important to know that skincare products can sometimes unintentionally worsen hyperpigmentation. Certain ingredients, especially those that cause irritation or increase sun sensitivity, can trigger the skin to produce more melanin, making dark spots appear darker or larger. For instance, harsh exfoliants or strong acids might inflame the skin if used improperly, leading to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. One thing I learned is the crucial role of sun protection. Even if you're using products aimed at fading dark spots, without diligent sunscreen application, UV exposure can deepen pigmentation. So, a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher is essential daily. Ingredients such as retinoids, vitamin C, and niacinamide are generally beneficial for brightening, but it's key to introduce them gradually to avoid irritation. Patch testing new products and monitoring how your skin responds helps prevent exacerbating dark spots. Additionally, some products may contain fragrance, alcohol, or other sensitizing agents that could provoke pigment changes. Always opt for gentle, non-comedogenic formulations suitable for your skin type. In summary, while the goal is to lighten dark spots, improper skincare choices or neglecting sun protection can indeed make them darker. Listening to your skin, using targeted yet gentle ingredients, and protecting from UV rays have proven effective for me in managing and improving dark spots over time.
