... Read moreOkay, so you've seen my basic recipe for a DIY room and linen spray, and it's a game-changer! But maybe you're wondering why we use certain ingredients, or if there are other options out there. I totally get it! When I first started making my own sprays, I had so many questions about what goes into them and how to get the perfect result. Let's dive a little deeper into the wonderful world of homemade room spray ingredients! First up, let's talk about the unsung heroes: emulsifiers and preservatives. In my recipe, I use polysorbate 20 to help those lovely fragrance oils or essential oils mix evenly with the distilled water. Without it, your oil and water would separate, and you'd just be spraying water followed by concentrated oil – not ideal! Other options sometimes used include solubilizers like cromollient SCE or even a high-proof alcohol like vodka or witch hazel, which can act as a natural solubilizer for simpler, albeit less shelf-stable, sprays. Knowing this helped me understand why my first few attempts weren't quite right! Then there's the preservative, like the jeepcide Cap 7 I mentioned. This is super important, especially when you're using water in your mix. Water can harbor bacteria and mold, and trust me, you don't want to be spraying that around your home! A good preservative ensures your spray stays fresh and safe for longer. Propylene glycol, also in my formula, helps to solubilize the fragrance and can also help with scent throw, making your beautiful 'Oud & Bergamot' notes linger longer in the air. Now, for the fun part: your scent! I love using quality fragrance oils, like the 'Oud & Bergamot' blend I featured, because they offer a consistent and often stronger scent. However, many of you might prefer essential oils for their natural benefits. If you go the essential oil route, remember they are potent! Always research their safety for pets and children, and for different surfaces. Lavender for relaxation, peppermint for focus, citrus for an uplifting mood – the possibilities are endless. I often blend a few drops of orange with cedarwood for a grounding yet fresh aroma, or eucalyptus and tea tree for a clean, invigorating boost. If you're looking for an even simpler recipe with just a few key ingredients, you can try a basic vodka or witch hazel based spray. For example, combine 1/2 cup distilled water, 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol or witch hazel, and 20-30 drops of your favorite essential oils. This version might not have the same longevity or emulsification as a more complex formula, but it's a fantastic starting point for beginners. Just remember to shake well before each use! A few final tips: always use distilled water to prevent mineral buildup and extend shelf life. Store your homemade sprays in dark glass or PET plastic bottles to protect the essential or fragrance oils from light degradation. And don't forget to label your creations with the date and ingredients! It helps you remember your favorite blends and ensures you're always spraying a fresh batch. Making your own room spray is such a rewarding way to personalize your space and create an ambiance that truly reflects you!
