ðSapa. The city is cold in the fog curtain.ðŧðģ
The history of Sa Pa is interesting both as a traditional ethnic resident and as a resort town in colonial times.
1. Precolonial period and original settlements
Ethnic groups: Originally, the area was inhabited by a variety of ethnic groups, such as the Hmong and the Red Dao, who migrated from southern China hundreds of years ago.
Way of life: These hill people live by farming, especially terraced fields, along the hillsides of which is the wisdom inherited to cope with the steep terrain.
2.French colonial period (early 20th century)
Discovery: In 1903, a French geographical expedition discovered the area, and colloquially called "Lo Suoi Tung."
Hill Station: The French developed Sapa into a sun rest and recovery station for soldiers and high officials to escape the hot weather from Hanoi.
Architecture: Nearly 300 European villas were built, including the Sapa Stone Church built in 1895-1902, which remains an important symbol to date.
The word "Sapa" comes from Mandarin Chinese, meaning "Sandy Area," because in the past a flea market was held on a sand plaza along the river.
3. Age of War and Reconstruction
Destruction: During the period 1940-1950, the city of Sapa was heavily damaged by the war of independence and bombing, turning almost all its old villas and buildings into ruins.
Return: After Vietnam opened up the country and revived tourism in the period 1993-1995, Sapa regained popularity with infrastructure improvements and rail line connections from Hanoi.
Today, Sapa has become a global destination combining tribal heritage and French urban charm.
