The warm day of the sun
The morning of the Chinese New Year had arrived. The sun woke up excited. He smelled the fragrance of smoke, incense and the smell of food floating from in the kitchen. The whole house was adorned with bright red lanterns. The sun quickly jumped out of bed to find Ama.
In the kitchen, Ama was busy preparing offerings. Tawan rushed in to help Ama wash the big golden oranges. Ama said that oranges meant good luck and auspiciousness. Tawan deliberately washed all oranges until they were shiny.
Ama laid out boiled chickens, big ones and steamed fish on a beautiful red plate. Ama explained to the sun that each food has a good meaning, such as fish means having plenty of food throughout the year. The sun looked at them with interest.
When it was time to pay homage, Sun helped Ama lift the fruit tray to the table in front of the altar. He saw red lanterns swinging in the wind. Sun felt that the house today looked more special than any other day because all the families gathered.
Ama lit three incense sticks for the sun and taught him to pray for blessings from gods and ancestors. The sun closed his eyes and thought of good wishes for everyone in the house. The mild aroma of the incense made him feel calm.
The sun bowed down humbly to the way Ama taught him. He thanked his ancestors for always protecting his family. Ama said that worship was not just a ritual, but an act of gratitude.
After paying homage, it was time to burn the silver paper, the sun playfully helped Ama fold the paper into the shape of a boat and a gold bar. Ama said that this was to send supplies and money to his heavenly ancestors.
The mother walked in with a cup of candles candy and hot tightrot candy. The sweet smell was subtle all over the room. The mother told the sun that tightrot candy meant a sweet and progressive life. The sun couldn't wait to taste it.
At the completion of the ceremony, Ama took out a red envelope called "Aung Pao" and sent it to the sun, wishing him good learning and a good boy. The sun took the envelope with joy and hugged Ama tightly.
This year's Wai Wai Day ends in elation. Tawan learns that the Chinese New Year Festival is a time of love, gratitude and a bright new beginning. He holds a lucky orange in his hand and looks at the sky full of hope.
