Moving? Organize.

Seriously. It’s worth it.

I spent a week decluttering and taking stock of everything that is in my house and garage. I’ve started packing but know that realistically it’ll take a few crank days to get it done before the movers get here to load up our stuff and take it to the next place!! Thankful is an understatement!! #organization #moving #ocd #springcleaning #unfiltered

... Read moreMoving is often cited as one of life's most stressful events, and I completely agree! I recently went through the process, and let me tell you, what truly saved my sanity and helped me keep things moving efficiently was a rock-solid organization plan. I used to think I could just wing it, but after realizing how much stuff I'd accumulated over the years, I knew I needed a strategy to stay organized when moving. Before even thinking about packing a single box, I dedicated a significant amount of time to decluttering. This is where my 'Not Coming' list came in super handy. I went through my home room by room—from the Master Bedroom to the Living Room and even the Toddler Room—and sorted everything into three distinct piles: Keep, Donate/Sell, or Trash. For items I hadn't used in a year, clothes that no longer fit, or decor that didn't spark joy, they went straight onto the 'Not Coming' list. It felt incredibly liberating to let go of things and realize I wouldn't be paying to move items I didn't truly need or want. Selling some larger items even helped offset moving costs! Once the decluttering was done, the next crucial step to staying organized when moving was creating a detailed inventory. Believe me, the phrase 'Inventory is Everything' isn't just a catchy sentiment; it's the absolute truth! I used a simple spiral notebook, just like you see in some of my planning notes, to meticulously list every single item that was coming with us. This wasn't just for insurance purposes; it quickly became my indispensable roadmap for packing and, more importantly, unpacking. For the Kitchen, for example, I had a dedicated 'Kitchen Pt. 1' list, breaking down everything from large appliances to small dishes, glassware, and even pantry staples. I did the same for 'Pet Things' – listing bowls, toys, food, medications, and beds to ensure our furry family members' needs were covered. And don't forget 'Laundry' – towels, linens, cleaning supplies, and detergents all got their own dedicated section. This level of detail meant I knew exactly what was in each box before it was even sealed, making the entire process of keeping things moving so much less chaotic. With my comprehensive inventory in hand, packing transformed from a daunting task into a manageable project. Each box received a unique number corresponding to my inventory list, along with a clear label indicating its general contents and the room it belonged in (e.g., 'Master Bedroom - Bedding & Linens' or 'Toddler Room - Toys & Books'). This system was an absolute game-changer for staying organized when moving, ensuring that on arrival, boxes went directly to their designated rooms, saving precious time and energy. I also made sure to pack an 'essentials' box for the first night or two. This included toiletries, a change of clothes for each family member, basic tools, pet food, chargers, and any immediate necessities. It’s a small detail that makes a huge difference in those first few tired hours in a new home. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, but breaking the move down into smaller, actionable tasks, like tackling one room's inventory per day, really helped me keep things moving. Remember, it's okay to take breaks and celebrate small victories. The goal is a smoother transition, and a well-organized move is truly an investment in your peace of mind. Trust me, the effort you put into getting organized before the move pays off tenfold on moving day and beyond!
