Two things can be true simultaneously

Feeling numb and furious can be true at the same time — here’s how to use both without losing yourself.

1) Name it: say out loud “I’m numb” and “I’m furious.”

Two sentences.

No explanation.

2) Timebox it: 10 minutes for raw feeling, 5 minutes for a release (write it, voice note it, let it out privately.)

3) Translate one feeling into a boundary:

numbness → cancelonething you don’t need; fury → send one text you won’t send (write it, then delete)

4) Night check: before bed, list one small victory (made tea, opened a window, didn’t reply)

Try this tonight. Choose one step.

Notice the shift.

Save this.

Share it with someone rebuilding.

Follow for short honest tools that don’t sugarcoat the mess.

When I first started to feel both numb and furious after a difficult breakup, I struggled to make sense of my feelings. What helped me was first acknowledging each emotion without judgment — simply saying aloud, "I feel numb," and then, "I feel furious." This naming step created space between me and my emotions, which made them less intimidating. I also found it beneficial to timebox my emotions. Setting aside about 10 minutes to deeply feel my numbness or fury, followed by 5 minutes to express these feelings — whether through journaling or voice notes — helped me process without becoming consumed. This method gave me control and prevented emotional flooding. Translating one feeling into a boundary was a game changer. For example, feeling numb led me to cancel a commitment I didn’t truly want to keep, which respected my need for rest. The fury motivated me to write a message I never sent — instead, I wrote and deleted it, which helped me release tension safely. Before bed, I started a nightly check-in where I'd identify a small victory — even if it was as simple as making a cup of tea or choosing not to reply to a stressful text. These small wins rebuilt my confidence and sense of agency. Remember, numbness keeps you safe and fury demands change. Neither is the enemy. Approaching both with compassion and practical steps supports your healing journey and prevents emotional overwhelm. You don’t need permission to feel both—just a plan to meet them effectively.
