... Read moreIf you are a fan of mystery and dark academia, 'If We Were Villains' is an extraordinary novel that weaves together the complexity of college-life with Shakespearean drama. The story revolves around a group of students at an elite arts conservatory, whose intense friendships are tested in the wake of a murder among them, a narrative structure that effortlessly shifts between past and present. The book is often compared to 'The Secret History' by Donna Tartt, making it a must-read for those captivated by tales of intellectual rivalry and tragic consequences. The characters are deeply layered, with motivations that reflect both the hunger for success and the moral ambiguity often found in classic literature. These students are more than just aspiring actors; they embody the very essence of Shakespeare’s tragic heroes, battling their inner demons as they navigate the tumultuous waters of friendship and ambition. The beautifully crafted prose enriches the reading experience, offering engaging insights into the mental and emotional landscapes of each character. Fans of poetic storytelling will find quotes like “you can justify anything if you do it poetically enough” to resonate greatly. With its gripping plot twists and evocative writing style, this book not only keeps readers on the edge of their seats but also encourages a deeper reflection on the moral dilemmas faced by its characters. Don't miss the chance to explore the striking illustrations in the anniversary edition which enhance the reading experience, making this book not just a story but a collectible treasure for bibliophiles. Whether you are revisiting or discovering 'If We Were Villains' for the first time, prepare to be enthralled by the interplay of loyalty, betrayal, and the quest for identity in this poignant tale.
