🌴LEAVING HAWAII🌴

To start, I moved to Hawaii the summer after graduating college. I was ready for a fresh start and was moving with one of my hometown friends who was very familiar with the area. I had visited once for about three weeks and had a great time. And although finding housing came with challenges and was pretty stressful, I was really excited and happy to be living there at first.

🌴Why I decided to move away:🌴

(1) Location: I grew up on an island in Alaska and when I was 18 I was ready to go and I had that same feeling here. Aka island fever. Although I lived on the Big Island, after awhile it didn’t feel big enough. It was also more difficult to get to the mainland and much more expensive.

(2) Population Size: After living in Alaska, Washington, and now Hawaii, I discovered that I want to live somewhere busier. And I know that isn’t for everyone, but I want to live in a city with a large population of people 20 year olds, with lots of things to do. Don’t get me wrong, there are things to do on the island, but most involve the outdoors which is still great, however, the bar scene and young adult scene wasn’t very apparent.

(3) Sense of Belonging: In general, I just didn’t feel like Hawaii was the place for me. I had a hard time meeting people and therefore did a lot on my own. It did help with my independence, but overall I just didn’t feel like I fit.

(4) Cost: This one is pretty self explanatory. Rent prices, groceries, gas, etc. were all high. I had an okay paying job and I wasn’t fully struggling with paying for everything, but I also wasn’t saving as much as I wanted to.

🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴

With all that being said, I have nothing against Hawaii, but it’s not the place for me to live right now. I loved my coworkers and learning about Hawaii from their local standpoints and I absolutely loved living right by the ocean. I went to the beach almost everyday, sometimes once or twice and It felt like a long vacation. I enjoyed spending my time exploring all that the island had to offer, but as time went on I began to feel dissatisfied and I didn’t love my living situation.

... Read moreLeaving Hawaii, even when it feels like the right decision, often comes with a whirlwind of emotions. Beyond the practical reasons, I found myself grappling with a mix of relief, sadness, and even a touch of guilt. It's tough to explain to others why you'd leave what many consider paradise, and sometimes, it can feel like you're letting go of a dream. But the truth is, everyone's experience is unique, and what works for one person might not work for another. Even now, I often find myself reminiscing about certain aspects of island life. The OCR results perfectly capture some of these feelings: I definitely miss the beaches. Waking up and being just a short drive from stunning coastlines, where the sand felt like powdered sugar and the water was always an inviting shade of turquoise, is something truly special. And of course, the sun! There’s an undeniable warmth and brightness that permeates everything in Hawaii, making even ordinary days feel more vibrant. While I don't miss the humidity as much, the overall pleasant weather was certainly a highlight. There's a subtle beauty in the daily rhythms of nature there – the sound of the ocean, the scent of plumeria, and the lush green landscapes. Beyond the natural beauty, navigating the logistics of moving from Hawaii was an experience in itself. It’s not like packing up a truck and driving across a state line on the mainland. Shipping belongings, especially cars or larger furniture, can be incredibly expensive and requires meticulous planning. I had to research different freight companies, compare quotes, and coordinate pick-up and delivery, which added another layer of stress to an already emotional process. Finding a new job and securing housing on the mainland also felt like starting from scratch, especially after building a routine and a small network on the island. Re-adjusting to life away from Hawaii was also a transition. The slower pace of island life, the emphasis on outdoor activities, and the unique cultural nuances are all things you get used to. Moving back to a busier city, as I desired, meant re-learning to navigate traffic, appreciate different types of entertainment, and find my new favorite local spots. It’s a reverse culture shock in a way, but also an opportunity to rediscover what I value in a community. While I missed the immediate access to nature, I quickly started to appreciate the wider range of social activities, cultural events, and diverse dining options that a larger city offers. Ultimately, my decision to leave Hawaii was about finding a place where I felt a stronger sense of belonging and could pursue the kind of life I envisioned for myself. It was a journey of self-discovery, and while challenging, it taught me so much about my own needs and priorities. For anyone considering moving from Hawaii, know that your feelings are valid, and it's okay to choose a path that truly aligns with your personal growth, even if it means leaving paradise behind. It’s a big step, but often, a necessary one for building the life you truly desire.
