I finally got around to trying Athena’s aluminum free all over body deodorants and I have thoughts! First is that they DO WORK! As someone who is forever skeptical of aluminum free deodorants, I was pleasantly surprised that these actually work and I have worn both to the gym!
The full body deodorant spray works super well, I love using it before the gym as an all over body deodorizer and I find that it controls sweat and prevents odor, the vanilla scent is also a huge plus.
I really wanted to love the solid deodorant. However, as someone who is super sensitive to fragrance, something about the fragrance concentration in this version was super irritating to my underarms. It also works to control sweat and prevent odor but if you have sensitive skin, I wouldn’t recommend. What are your thoughts on aluminum free deodorants?!
... Read moreMy journey to finding effective aluminum-free deodorants has been a long one, filled with many hits and misses. Like many, I was skeptical, wondering if anything could truly compare to traditional antiperspirants, especially when it came to managing sweat and odor during active days. That's why I was so keen to put the Athena Club's aluminum-free offerings to a proper test, specifically their vanilla-scented spray and solid options. I wanted to see if they could actually deliver on their promises of combating sweat and odor, not just for my underarms, but for my 'full body' needs.
First, let's talk about the Athena Full Body Deodorant Spray. This was the real standout for me. I’ve found that the best way to use it is right after showering, on clean, dry skin. I focus not just on my underarms, but also on other areas prone to sweat and odor, like the back of my knees, inner thighs, or even my chest before a workout. The fine mist of this vanilla-scented dry-spray deodorant covers a good area without feeling sticky. What truly impressed me was its longevity. I remember one particularly intense gym session where I’d applied it beforehand, and I genuinely felt fresh throughout and even for hours after. It doesn't stop sweat entirely – that's a common misconception with aluminum-free products – but it absolutely controls odor and keeps that fresh feeling going strong. It truly proved effective for combating sweat and odor in an all-over capacity.
Now, onto the Athena All-Over Solid Deodorant. This one presented a mixed experience for me, echoing what the original post mentioned about sensitive skin. Applying it is straightforward, just like any solid stick, gliding smoothly onto the skin. It also worked well to prevent odor and control some moisture, and the vanilla scent was pleasant. However, as someone with sensitive skin, I did notice some irritation after a few uses. It felt like the fragrance concentration in this particular formula was a bit too much for my delicate underarm area. So, while its effectiveness in preventing sweat and odor was there, the comfort level wasn't ideal for me personally. This highlights that even within a single brand, formulations can differ, and what works for one person might not for another, especially concerning ingredients like fragrance in aluminum-free deodorants.
Many people ask, 'does aluminum free deodorant stop sweat?' The honest answer is no, it doesn't function as an antiperspirant in the same way products with aluminum salts do, which literally block sweat ducts. Instead, aluminum-free body deodorants work by neutralizing odor-causing bacteria and often contain ingredients that absorb some moisture. My experience with Athena confirmed this; I still sweat, but there was no unpleasant odor. This transition can take a week or two as your body adjusts, but the benefits, like avoiding certain chemicals, are often worth it.
Overall, if you're exploring aluminum-free options or looking for an effective full body solution, the Athena Club's full body dry-spray deodorant is definitely worth considering, especially if you love a warm vanilla scent. It’s effective for combating sweat and odor without irritation. For the solid, proceed with caution if you have sensitive skin, but it could be a great choice for others. It's fantastic to see brands creating more sophisticated and effective body deodorants that cater to a wider range of needs.
