My friends and I recently spent a fantastic weekend there, and I wanted to share a deeper dive into our experience beyond just the highlights. First off, securing your spot! We found it super easy to reserve a tent site online for around $30 a night, which felt like a steal for such a beautiful location. I'd recommend booking a bit in advance, especially if you're aiming for a popular weekend or fall foliage season. When we arrived, the check-in process was smooth, and we quickly found our site – nestled amongst the trees, it felt really private. Our campsite was perfect for our group. We had enough space for our two tents, and there was a handy picnic table and a fire pit, which became the heart of our evenings. Remember those copper mugs from my photos? They were perfect for hot coffee in the chilly mornings and even better for a cozy drink by the fire at night. We brought along our portable stove and a small grill, making campfire cooking an absolute breeze. From sizzling hotdogs to foil packet dinners, everything tasted better cooked outdoors! Shades State Park is a hiker's paradise! We spent a good portion of our days exploring. If you love a challenge, you absolutely have to check out Trail 2. The signs don't lie – it's marked as 'VERY RUGGED,' and it definitely lives up to its name with steep climbs and rocky descents, but the views are incredibly rewarding. We also made sure to find Maidenhair Falls, a truly picturesque spot that feels like something out of a fairy tale. The park's diverse terrain, with its winding rivers and incredible autumn foliage, makes every hike an adventure. Don't forget sturdy hiking boots! Based on our trip, here’s a quick list of what I’d suggest packing for your Shades adventure: Shelter: A good quality tent (or two, like we had!) and sleeping bags appropriate for the overnight temps. Cooking Gear: Portable stove, grill grate for the fire pit, cooler for food and drinks, reusable water bottles, and those essential instant coffee packets for morning brews. Hiking Gear: Sturdy hiking boots, comfortable athletic wear, a small backpack for water and snacks. Campsite Comforts: Camping chairs, card games (our go-to for evening fun!), and plenty of firewood. Safety: First-aid kit, headlamps/flashlights. The goal is to be prepared but also keep it simple so you can truly unwind. What makes Shades stand out? For me, it’s the perfect blend of challenging natural beauty and accessible camping. It’s less crowded than some other Indiana parks, offering a more peaceful escape. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just looking for a relaxing weekend by the fire with friends, Shades has something for everyone. We left feeling refreshed, recharged, and already planning our next visit. If you're in Indiana and craving a dose of nature, definitely add Shades State Park to your list. You won't regret it!
