Sourdough Starter
Watch my starter rise over 3 hrs in 36s!
Creating a robust sourdough starter is the foundation for baking delicious sourdough bread. A starter thrives on the natural yeasts and bacteria present in flour and the environment. To ensure success, start with high-quality flour and filtered water. Feed your starter regularly to maintain its activity—typically every 12 hours when it’s bubbling and growing. When you begin, mix equal parts of water and flour in a clean jar; around 100 grams of each is a good start. Stir the mixture well, cover it loosely, and let it sit at room temperature. After 24 hours, you may notice bubbles forming; this is a sign of fermentation. Regularly discarding some of the starter and adding fresh flour and water will help improve its strength. Ideally, your starter should double in size within a few hours, which indicates that it's ready for baking. Once your starter is active and healthy, you can experiment with sourdough bread recipes. Additionally, understanding the different types of flour—like whole wheat or rye—can enhance the flavor and strength of your starter. Keep in mind that every starter is unique; the local environment can influence its characteristics and rising times. Happy baking!
