Easy Hairstyle: Dutch Braid Messy Bun

Creating a beautiful Dutch braid messy bun is one of my favorite ways to look put-together without spending hours on my hair. It's incredibly versatile, perfect whether you're heading to a casual brunch or need a quick, elegant updo for a special occasion. I’ve found it’s a fantastic style to master because it looks intricate but is surprisingly simple once you get the hang of it! Let’s dive into how you can achieve this gorgeous hairstyle. First, I always start with day-old hair if possible, as it holds braids better. If your hair is freshly washed, a little dry shampoo or texturizing spray can add grip. Begin by sectioning off the top front part of your hair, from your temples back to your crown. This will be the starting point for your Dutch braid. Divide this section into three equal strands. Now, instead of crossing the strands over each other like a French braid, you'll cross them under each other. Start by taking the right strand and crossing it under the middle strand. Then, take the left strand and cross it under the new middle strand. As you continue braiding, add a small section of hair from the right side to your right strand before crossing it under the middle. Do the same on the left side, adding hair to the left strand before crossing it under the middle. Keep repeating this process, working your way down the back of your head, incorporating new hair from the sides until you’ve braided down to the nape of your neck. Once you’ve gathered all the hair into your Dutch braid, continue braiding a regular three-strand braid for a few inches, then secure it temporarily with a small elastic. Now for the 'messy bun' part! Gently pull and loosen the loops of your Dutch braid. This step is key to getting that perfectly undone, fuller look. Don't be afraid to really tug at the edges of the braid – the messier, the better in my opinion! Next, take the remaining braided tail and coil it around the base of your Dutch braid at the nape of your neck, forming a bun. Secure it firmly with bobby pins, making sure to hide the ends. I usually use 5-7 pins to ensure it stays put all day. For a truly messy bun, I like to pull out a few face-framing pieces of hair around my temples to soften the look. Now, for those of you with shorter hair, don't think you can't rock a Dutch braid bun! You absolutely can. The trick is to use smaller sections when braiding and to pin more frequently. You might end up with a smaller bun, but it will still look incredibly chic. If your hair is layered, you might have more stray pieces, but that just adds to the messy charm! For those with beautiful curly hair, this style is fantastic for embracing your natural texture. Instead of trying to smooth everything down, let your curls add volume and character to the bun. You can even leave out some curly tendrils around your face and neck for a romantic feel. To define your curls before braiding, a little curl cream or mousse can work wonders. I’ve found that working with the natural texture makes the bun look even more unique and stunning.
