Book Review of : Diary of an Oxygen Thief

Genuinely what the actually fuck did I just read? Honestly I don’t even care about the misogyny and all that- I was prepared for that. I just didn’t know this dude literally just put thought on paper and published it without any rhyme or reason. I HATED how he described the ending. I was so excited to see what the conclusion of his actions were and then he writes it like he’s tripping on acid or something?? All this book did was remind me bad people are often more successful than good people. Dude is a straight up loser for publishing this anonymously. If only he put this story together as…an actual book.. with a plot and a clear timeline, it would have been fantastic. Instead dude can’t be fucked to use commas.

I bought the sequel and spoiler alert it’s worst than this one and has even less substance. Truly pointless.

... Read moreOkay, so you've seen my initial reaction to 'Diary of an Oxygen Thief' – a resounding 'WTF?!' and a firm 1/5 rating. I know I'm not alone in feeling this way after reading this 'anonymous New York Times Bestseller.' It’s really made me reflect on what makes a book truly engaging, and frankly, this one missed the mark for me on so many levels. One of the biggest questions I had, and I see others do too, is 'What is an oxygen thief meaning?' For me, after finishing the book, it felt like the narrator himself was the oxygen thief – constantly taking without giving, sucking the life out of every interaction, every relationship, and especially the reader's patience! He seemed to thrive on negativity, which perfectly encapsulates the feeling I had while reading his rambling thoughts. It’s a clever title, I’ll give it that, but it didn't redeem the content for me. A lot of people also ask about the 'diary of an oxygen thief author' and the fact that they're anonymous. While some might find the anonymity intriguing, for me, it just added to the frustration. It felt like the author was hiding behind the veil of 'art' to publish something so unpolished and frankly, poorly structured. If this was meant to be a raw, stream-of-consciousness piece, it still needed some foundation, some craft. The 'anonymous' label didn't make it better; it just felt like an excuse. And for those wondering if 'is diary of an oxygen thief spicy'? Well, 'spicy' isn't really the word I'd use. There's a lot of talk about relationships and sex, but it's drenched in misogyny and a deeply unhealthy perspective. It's less 'spicy' and more 'toxic.' I was prepared for some dark themes, but the way women were depicted and the protagonist's internal monologue felt less like a character study and more like a justification of harmful views. It certainly wasn't the kind of 'spicy' that makes for an engaging read; it was just uncomfortable. I recall picking up the 'diary of an oxygen thief first page' hoping for some intrigue, some hint of the story to come. But even from the beginning, it was clear this wasn't going to be a conventional narrative. The writing style was disjointed, full of run-on sentences and a distinct lack of proper punctuation, as I mentioned in my initial review. It felt like reading someone's unedited journal entries, which could be powerful if done right, but here it just came across as lazy. It truly made me want to scream 'DO NOT RECOMMEND' from the rooftops. And don't even get me started on 'the oxygen thief diaries series'! I made the mistake of buying the sequel, thinking maybe the first one was just a rough start. Big mistake. It had even less substance, if that's even possible. It reinforced my feeling that this wasn't a series designed to tell a coherent story, but rather a series of disconnected, often infuriating, thoughts. If you consider reading this, definitely skip the entire 'series' and save yourself the headache. In conclusion, if you're looking for a compelling story, well-crafted prose, or even just a coherent plot, this isn't it. My '1/5 rating' reflects a deep disappointment in a book that had so much buzz but delivered so little. It might spark conversation, but for me, it mostly sparked frustration. There are so many incredible books out there; this one just isn't worth your precious reading time.
