Benefits of Budgeting: Why People Budget (2)

Reason 2: Paying off debt

I think most people budget because they have some type of debt, whether it’s loans, credit cards, or something else, there’s always the need to figure out how much you need to pay in however long to pay off the entire debt with interest (most of the time). This ties into the bills and expenses that you have to take out at the beginning of your budgeting, the first priority. But once the top priorities are sorted out and you can see how much you have left of your money, you can also see how much you can pay extra towards these debts in order to avoid annoying interest.

Paying extra can allow you to pay off your debt in a shorter amount of time, lowering the time in which you would be getting interest, but also lowering the interest you get during the pay off. If you pay more money in shorter time, every month the balance is lower, meaning lower interest.

These are the types of things to budget for when it comes to debt, seeing if you can pay more now to avoid paying even more in the future. As I said in the previous part, budgeting is really a way of paying your future self back by seeing your spending habits and learning what can actually be done with your money.

Reason 3: Stop Overspending!!

So so so many people need to budget because they have a problem of overspending which can cause terrible domino effects.

You spend a little too much money, and now you can’t pay a bill until next payday. Now you have a late fee, and have to pay even more. Sometimes this cycle can be so bad that it can result in serious debt and consequences like evictions or getting your utilities turned off, or getting your car repossessed.

This is why it is so important for you to sit down for five minutes with your calculator and a piece of paper and a pen, and write down all of your expenses, take that out of your income, and see how much money you have left. Figure out what you want to do with that money, if you have a shopping need, then save less money and spend more, but at least you know how much you have available to spend.

I was able to fit the last two reasons into one part!! Sorry about that again, I know I hate having part 2’s but it was late and I didn’t want anyone to have to read through such a long long post that it would have been if I put them all into one post. Tomorrow is part three of the whole series, which is where I’ll explain how to budget!

... Read moreI totally get it – the idea of budgeting can sound restrictive, maybe even a little boring. But let me tell you, from my own experience, it's actually one of the most liberating things you can do for your finances. When I first started, I was constantly worried about money, especially with a few credit card balances looming over me and seemingly endless student loans. It felt like I was just treading water, and I knew I needed a change. For me, one of the biggest motivators was paying off debt. Before budgeting, I'd make the minimum payments, and sometimes a little extra, but without a real plan. It was like throwing darts in the dark. Once I sat down and really looked at my income versus my expenses, I found pockets of money I didn't even realize I had. That's when I started applying a debt payoff strategy. Instead of just paying randomly, I earmarked specific amounts for my highest interest debts first, like those pesky credit card loans. Seeing those balances shrink month after month wasn't just a financial win; it was an emotional one. It gave me so much hope and a sense of accomplishment that I hadn't felt before. Budgeting truly helped me avoid paying even more in interest down the line, giving me a clear path to becoming debt-free without feeling deprived. Another huge reason for me to embrace budgeting was to stop overspending. Oh, the impulse buys! I used to be a pro at justifying purchases, telling myself 'I deserve this' or 'it's just a little bit.' But those 'little bits' added up to me constantly wondering where all my money went. I was definitely living beyond my means without even realizing the scary domino effect it was having. One late bill led to another, and the stress was immense. My budget became my reality check. It forced me to see exactly where my money was going. I identified my spending triggers – for me, it was often online shopping after a long, stressful day. Now, when I feel that urge, I have a system. I put items in a digital cart and wait 24 hours. More often than not, the desire passes, saving me money and preventing buyer's remorse. I also started allocating a small, guilt-free amount each month for 'fun money' or 'wants.' Knowing I had a specific amount I could spend without impacting my other financial goals made me more mindful and actually helped me spend less overall, because I wasn't constantly fighting myself. It's amazing how much control you gain when you simply know your numbers. It completely shifted my mindset from feeling deprived to feeling empowered and truly in charge of my financial future.
