Lower your electric bill

Here are some tips on how we lower our electric bill! While solar is probably one of the best ways it is not always accessible to everyone especially if you rent like us.

The first step is always to get a smart thermostat! Not only for the convenience of adjusting it wherever you are but also so you can link it to programs like-

OhmConnect- we love using this program because it is free, you can earn points and win prizes for saving energy. This program alerts you when it’s a peak energy time so you can try to use as little energy as possible.

Pricing plans- check if you company has different pricing plans to choose from. For example, we can choose to pay a fixed rate per kilowatt, have a lower rate for off peak hours and higher for on peak, or they can average out all your bills to one predictable payment and this is based off your previous years bills.

Discount programs- search for any discount programs provided by your electric company or even your state or county. My energy company offers a really great discount depending on your income.

Read moreIn addition to using a smart thermostat and programs like OhmConnect, many energy providers offer valuable discount initiatives such as the CARE Energy Bill Discount and FERA Energy Bill Discount, which can lower your costs significantly if you qualify based on income. These programs are typically designed to assist low-income households and can reduce your bill by up to 30%, according to recent data. Another important strategy is understanding peak and off-peak energy times. By shifting your electricity usage to off-peak hours, you can benefit from lower rates and reduce your consumption during costly on-peak periods. Some utility companies even incentivize customers with points or rewards for limiting energy use during peak times, helping you save money while supporting the grid's efficiency. If solar power isn't an option—frequently the case for renters—consider energy-efficient appliances and LED lighting to further cut down power usage. Simple behavioral adjustments like turning off unused devices, using power strips, and washing clothes in cold water also make a substantial impact. Additionally, check with your state or county energy offices for local programs that assist with energy savings or provide bill credits. Many areas have seasonal or emergency relief programs designed to support residents through energy cost fluctuations. By combining smart technology, participating in energy-saving programs, exploring flexible pricing, and applying for discounts, you can manage your electric bill effectively without significant lifestyle changes. It's about staying informed and proactive, making small adjustments that add up over time to meaningful savings.
