People don’t talk enough about how deeply dogs grieve the loss of another dog. After Dior passed, Dolce changed completely. She became quiet, withdrawn, extra clingy, and honestly just seemed heartbroken. The light in her dimmed in a way that was impossible not to notice.

She and Dior did everything together. Every nap, every meal, every zoomie, every routine. He was her comfort, her confidence, and her constant companion. Losing him changed her world just as much as it changed ours.

Over time, she slowly started coming out of her shell again, but there was still something missing. And then Fendi came along.

Watching her slowly become herself again has been emotional in the best way. The spark in her eyes is back. She plays harder, gets excited again, and carries herself differently now that she has another companion beside her.

Nothing will ever replace Dior, and Fendi was never brought in to do that. But watching Dolce heal has reminded me that dogs have incredible emotional depth, and sometimes love from another dog can help mend pieces of a broken heart in ways we can’t.

If you’ve ever watched one of your dogs grieve another, you know exactly what I mean. 🤍🐾

... Read moreWatching a dog grieve the loss of a close companion reveals just how deeply sensitive and emotionally complex they are. Much like humans, dogs form strong attachments and routines that shape their daily lives. When a cherished friend passes away, it can disrupt their world in ways that are often visible through changes in behavior—such as withdrawal, clinginess, or a loss of enthusiasm for activities they once enjoyed. From my experience, it’s essential to allow grieving dogs the time and space they need to process their loss. Patience and gentle reassurance go a long way. I noticed that after losing a beloved dog, my remaining dog’s energy and mood shifted significantly. She became quieter and more reserved, distant from her usual playful self. This period of mourning can feel heart-wrenching, as it’s clear that their bond was truly special. Introducing a new canine companion isn’t about replacing the one who has passed, but rather offering a new source of comfort and connection. Bringing a friendly dog into the household often helps the grieving dog gradually reclaim their joyful spirit. It’s amazing to witness as they rekindle their playful behaviors, express excitement again, and show signs of emotional healing. This new companionship can gently fill some of the emptiness left behind. Moreover, dogs are incredibly empathetic and attuned to our emotions during these times. Providing consistent love, routine, and attention helps them navigate their feelings of loss. Simple activities like walks, playtime, and quiet cuddles can reinforce a sense of security and love. The phrase "Their hearts break too, but they can also heal" perfectly captures this journey—acknowledging both the pain and the hope found in the process. For anyone who has observed a dog mourning, you know how profound and moving this experience is. It reminds us all of the depth of a dog's emotional world and the power of companionship to heal even the most broken hearts.
