When I first started raising roosters, I honestly didn't give much thought to their diet beyond just tossing out some chicken feed. But over time, I realized that a healthy, happy rooster isn't just about good genes or a spacious coop – it's fundamentally about what they eat! My early roosters sometimes lacked energy, or their feathers didn't look as vibrant as I hoped. That's when I really dove deep into understanding rooster nutrition facts. I quickly learned that while roosters can eat much of what hens do, their specific nutritional needs can be slightly different, especially when it comes to protein and calcium balance. For instance, roosters don't need as much calcium as laying hens, and too much can actually be detrimental. My journey started with finding a high-quality, all-flock feed, which typically provides a good base. I look for something around 16-18% protein, which supports their muscle development and energy levels without overdoing it. Think of it as their daily multivitamin! Beyond the basic feed, I've found that variety is key. My roosters absolutely love foraging, and I encourage that by letting them have access to grassy areas where they can peck for bugs and greens. These natural treats provide essential vitamins and minerals that processed feed might miss. I also supplement their diet with fresh scraps from the kitchen – things like leafy greens, chopped vegetables, and even some fruits (in moderation, of course). They go absolutely wild for watermelon on a hot day! Protein boosters are another thing I've experimented with. Especially during molting season or if I have a rooster that seems a bit peaky, I'll offer mealworms or black soldier fly larvae as a treat. These are packed with protein and good fats, and my roosters see them as a high-value reward. Just a small handful a few times a week can make a noticeable difference in their energy and feather quality. And let's not forget grit and oyster shell! While roosters don't need oyster shell for egg production, having a separate container of insoluble grit is crucial for digestion. Since they don't have teeth, grit helps them grind down their food in their gizzard. I always have both available free-choice, even if they don't consume the oyster shell as much as the hens. Observing my roosters now, their combs are bright, their feathers are glossy, and they have plenty of energy to patrol the flock. It's truly amazing the difference a well-thought-out diet can make!
