Boat day 🫶
We had a much needed boat day last weekend. The water is beautiful and clean. We drove to a place called flat rock, parked the boat, and hung out in the water for a while. We had lunch and our FAVORITE restaurant and stopped to grab the kids some donuts in downtown. #summer #familytime #boat #donut
Oh my goodness, that boat day we had at Lake Wedowee last weekend was truly just what the doctor ordered! As a busy homeschool mama, finding those moments to truly unplug and connect as a family is priceless. The original post just scratches the surface of how rejuvenating it was, and I wanted to share a little more about why these lake days are so special to us, and maybe some tips for your own family adventures! First off, Lake Wedowee, AL, truly lives up to its reputation. The water really is sparkling clean, which makes swimming and just splashing around so much more enjoyable. There’s nothing quite like feeling that cool, clear water on a hot summer day. We love exploring different spots, and Flat Rock is a definite favorite for anchoring and just letting the kids (and us!) swim freely. It's safe, shallow in parts, and just perfect for a relaxed afternoon. We usually pack a cooler with snacks and drinks, but honestly, part of the fun of a boat day for us is the unexpected culinary adventures! Speaking of food, finding a local gem for lunch is always a highlight. Hacienda San Antonio Mexican Restaurant is a staple for a reason. After working up an appetite swimming and soaking up the sun, there’s nothing better than some authentic, delicious Mexican food. It's become a little tradition for us to stop there. And if you have kids like mine, you know a treat is almost mandatory! Discovering local spots like Wake & Shake for donuts in downtown was the perfect end to our outing. Those little family traditions are what make these trips so memorable, turning a simple boat ride into a cherished memory. If you’re thinking of planning your own Lake Wedowee boat day, or any lake trip with your family, here are a few things I’ve learned that make it smoother: Pack Smart: Beyond the usual towels and sunscreen, think about water toys, extra changes of clothes, and a first-aid kit. Motion sickness meds can be a lifesaver for some! Safety First: Life jackets, of course, but also teach kids basic water safety rules. We always do a quick run-through before we even leave the dock. Plan for Food & Fun: Whether you pack a picnic or plan a restaurant stop like we did, having a food plan prevents meltdowns. And don't forget entertainment for downtime – a deck of cards or even just a good book for relaxing. We sometimes bring a waterproof speaker for some tunes! Embrace Flexibility: Not every moment will go according to plan, and that’s perfectly okay! The best memories often come from spontaneous moments or overcoming little challenges together. Capture the Moments (but also be present): I love taking photos and videos to remember these days, but I also make a conscious effort to put the phone away and just be fully immersed in the family fun. These days, whether it's a Sunday adventure or a Monday getaway, are truly the fabric of our summer. They remind us that the best things in life are often simple: clean water, good food, and the laughter of your loved ones. Making these memories at Lake Wedowee, AL, is something we look forward to all year, and I hope this inspires you to create your own unforgettable family moments on the water!
