... Read moreAfter my recent 10-week ultrasound, I've had so many thoughts about this incredible milestone! For those of you also 10w5d pregnant, or just curious, let me share a bit more about what this scan truly means and what I learned from my experience. It’s such an exciting time in early pregnancy, and each appointment brings new discoveries.
When you're around 10 weeks pregnant, this ultrasound is often a big one – sometimes it's your first official look at your little one! For me, it wasn't just about seeing my baby again, but also confirming gestational age, checking on early development, and ensuring everything looks on track. The sonographer was meticulously examining my fetus at 10 weeks and 5 days gestation, taking measurements like the Crown-Rump Length (CRL). My baby measured 3.83 cm, which is a perfectly normal size for this stage – roughly the size of a large olive or a prune! It's amazing to think how much growth happens in such a short time. They also check various medical parameters to assess overall health and development.
Hearing that strong heartbeat over 160 bpm was absolutely incredible. It’s such a reassuring sound, a powerful reminder of the new life growing inside. And seeing those tiny, jerky movements for the first time? Priceless! My little one was really putting on a show, wiggling around so much that it was actually a bit tricky for the sonographer to get a clear picture. But honestly, watching that little body move, even just a flicker, brought such a wave of emotion. It made everything feel so real.
This appointment also included NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing). I know many of you might be wondering about it, so I wanted to share my perspective. From my understanding, it's a simple blood test that screens for certain chromosomal conditions, like Down syndrome, and can often tell you the baby's gender early on if you choose to find out. It’s a personal decision whether to have it done, but for me, having that extra information and peace of mind felt right during this early stage of my pregnancy journey. The wait for the results can be a little nerve-wracking, but it's usually just a week or two, and I'm eagerly anticipating mine this week!
If you have your 10-week scan coming up, here are a few tips I found helpful:
Hydrate: Sometimes they ask for a full bladder for better imaging, so a few glasses of water beforehand can be beneficial.
Wear comfortable clothes: You might need to expose your belly, so easy-to-adjust clothing is ideal.
Prepare questions: Write down anything you want to ask the sonographer or doctor. For instance, you might want to know about your baby's size, heart rate, or development.
Bring support: If possible, bring a partner or close friend. Sharing that special moment, seeing your baby for the first time, is truly unforgettable.
Enjoy the moment: It can fly by quickly, so try to take it all in and savor every second of seeing your tiny human.
This stage of pregnancy, around 10w5d pregnant, is such an exciting and pivotal time. You’ve often passed the earliest, most uncertain weeks, and you're now moving towards the second trimester. Symptoms can still be intense, or they might be starting to ease for some. Take it all in, cherish these first glimpses of your baby, and know that every little milestone, from that 3.83 cm measurement to the first flutter you see, is a step closer to meeting your bundle of joy!
