Bouncing back

In October, I had heart surgery.

It was an incredibly daunting thing to face: I was 30 years old, I was miserably unwell, and I was about to get a pacemaker. Up until then, I’d never had surgery, aside from my wisdom teeth. Not so much as a broken bone, and now I was becoming a cyborg.

I know my situation might not be quite as common for the 30 something crowd, but health issues pop up unexpectedly. Here are a few ways of navigating it:

- Tap into your village when you can. Remind yourself that you don’t have to do it alone, friends and family will likely offer help, don’t be afraid to say yes to it.

- Take as much time off from work as you need. Your doctor can help you extend your medical leave if you don’t feel well enough to go back when you’re scheduled to.

- Prepare foods ahead of time that will be quick and easy to prep. Make sure they match any diet plans your doctor has set for you post-op!

- Curate a collection of comfortable clothing that will make you feel good and will promote healing; I was significantly restricted for the first several days/weeks, so I had to avoid anything that required me to lift my arms up and I needed things with good support.

- Find others that have gone through the surgery and see if they have advice. I found a community of people who have gotten pacemakers on Reddit and they had such incredible words of wisdom.

Take it one day at a time 🤍 you’ve got this.

... Read moreRecovering from heart surgery, especially at a relatively young age like 30, can be a challenging and transformative journey. A pacemaker implantation, while life-saving, requires adjustments physically and emotionally. It’s important to understand the recovery timeline, which typically involves several weeks of rest and gradual return to physical activities to allow the surgical site to heal and the body to adapt to the device. Emotional wellbeing is equally critical during this time. Anxiety and stress over new health limitations are common and seeking support from healthcare professionals, counselors, or peer support groups can be invaluable. Online communities such as Reddit provide a platform where individuals who have undergone pacemaker implantation share practical advice, coping strategies, and encouragement, reducing feelings of isolation. Nutrition plays a pivotal role in recovery. Following your doctor’s dietary recommendations can help improve heart health and overall healing. Preparing meals ahead of time that are balanced, easy to digest, and aligned with any medical guidelines helps reduce stress and ensures nourishment even on days when energy is low. Additionally, managing daily activities carefully to avoid lifting arms or straining near the pacemaker site is crucial during the initial weeks. Wearing loose, comfortable clothing that does not irritate the chest area supports healing and provides comfort. Patients must monitor for any signs of infection or complications and maintain regular follow-ups with their cardiologist. Finally, workplace reintegration should be planned thoughtfully. Utilizing extended medical leave encourages full recovery without undue pressure. Open communication with employers about health needs can facilitate a smoother transition back to work, often with accommodations if needed. Understanding these aspects of recovery after heart surgery empowers individuals to bounce back with confidence, maintain quality of life, and embrace the new chapter with resilience and support.
