I said I had acne, not that I’m ugly 😂

One of the most common comments under my skin progress post (not by the girlies bc y’all know) was ,”but you still beautiful tho”. Gee, I never said I was ugly, I just said I have acne….but thanks? idk what to do with that 😂.

It just feels like there's this assumption that beauty and acne cannot coexist, so I need that extra validation from men in my comments? The women encouraged me by giving me faith in my journey and reassuring me that I’ve made progress. Only men (particularly older) were offering their “beauty” compliments.

Beauty and acne absolutely can coexist, so it feels like there's the assumption that I don't think I’m beautiful because I have it, or if I do have confidence, that I’m defying odds by doing so. Is acne even as deep as we make it?

There’s just something about getting that flood of comments that felt unnecessary. Maybe it would have helped someone else. If my post implied that I didn't feel beautiful, that would be one thing. Maybe I'm overthinking. Either way, I never posted to gain validation, but to share my story. Purpose served 🫡🤷🏾‍♀️

... Read moreAcne affects millions, yet societal perceptions often create barriers to self-acceptance. Many individuals grapple with the belief that acne undermines their beauty, leading to an unspoken stigma. Beauty standards, influenced by social media and cultural expectations, often dictate how people view themselves and others. The reality remains that beauty is complex and multifaceted; it encompasses more than just flawless skin. Conversations about acne, especially in communities focused on empowerment, can foster a supportive dialogue. Additionally, platforms like #acnepositivity and #blackgirlskincare promote narratives of acceptance and self-love. By sharing personal experiences, individuals can dismantle harmful myths about beauty and acne, encouraging others to embrace their imperfections and foster confidence. These movements highlight that acne does not define worth or beauty. As we continue these discussions, it’s essential to uplift authentic voices and create safe spaces where everyone feels valued. Embracing individuality leads to personal growth and creates a more inclusive definition of beauty that embraces all experiences.
