Happy Saturday! I’m here with another book review and I absolutely loved this rec!
When the Earl Met His Match is a marriage of convenience, not-his-baby, historical romance between Phoebe and Hugh.
I really felt for Phoebe. I think despite how many years have passed between when this book takes place and now, she endures many of the same struggles as others do today. Not everyone can afford to pursue their dreams, and it’s a heartbreaking reality that I think is touched upon in a very realistic way in this story. I really related to Phoebe during a low point she has, where she has a moment when she loses any sense of hope that she previously managed to maintain in small, tender moments with Hugh. However, after the man she loved gave up on her, sent away by her family to avoid scandal, and agreeing to be married to a man who doesn’t believe in love, it’s understandable that these things would weigh down on her, and one can only handle so much disappointment and betrayal before you close yourself off to any feelings of hope or love. And if they do come up, of course one might berate themselves for not learning their lesson the first time. That roller coaster of emotions is so draining, and there were so many moments in this book where I was right there with Phoebe as she endures this inner battle between holding onto hope and giving into harsh realities. The pain of that is beautifully captured in her story, and I think many others can relate.
Hugh is equal parts relatable and swoon-worthy. Despite his insistence on a marriage of convenience, he can’t help but want to take care of Phoebe and her baby and make Phoebe feel safe with him. His appreciation for her only grows as she learns sign language to communicate with him, something not many people will take the time to do. His hesitancy is understandable due to his past, but he still allows himself moments to feel everything he can for her to the best of his ability. He has a rough past with his mother leaving him at a young age and his father only teaching him that women can’t be trusted. Even though it takes time for him to overcome those lessons, Hugh realizes that not everyone who claims to love you will leave you, and that moment allows him to embrace Phoebe completely and vow do everything he can to show her he loves her.
This is easily one of my favorite historical romances I’ve read this year, and I will definitely be picking up more by Stacy Reid in the future💕

In 'When the Earl Met His Match', the marriage of convenience trope is artfully explored, showcasing the intricate dance between societal expectations and personal desires. The novel perfectly captures the struggles of its protagonists, Phoebe and Hugh, whose lives are marred by their respective pasts. Phoebe's journey is particularly resonant, mirroring many contemporary issues like having aspirations that seem just out of reach and the emotional toll of unfulfilled hopes. As she navigates her low points, readers can connect with her despair and resilience; this honesty in storytelling resonates deeply. Hugh, with his relatable flaws and swoon-worthy characteristics, evokes both admiration and empathy. His evolution throughout the book— from a man burdened by preconceived notions about love to one who learns to embrace vulnerability—is rewarding to witness. Their relationship grows as they face challenges together, redefining their understanding of love and trust. Together, they show readers that love can emerge against the odds, serving not just as an escape but also as a path to healing. Stacy Reid's command over historical romance narratives shines through as she weaves a tale of rediscovery and hope. This book is not only a delightful read for historical romance enthusiasts but also an essential reminder of the timeless power of love and understanding.
