CAN FIFA STILL UNITE THE WORLD?

A Call for Reflection, Transparency, and Courageous Leadership

For generations, the FIFA World Cup has been more than a football tournament.

It has been one of the very few global events capable of bringing together people of every race, language, religion, culture, and political persuasion. For one month every four years, billions of people celebrate together. Football becomes a common language.

That is precisely why the concerns surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup deserve thoughtful reflection.

Throughout this tournament, a series of controversial incidents has generated widespread debate among supporters, journalists, former players, and analysts. Questions have been raised about refereeing decisions, tournament organization, disciplinary rulings, travel arrangements affecting certain teams, and the consistency with which FIFA’s rules have been applied.

Whether every criticism is ultimately justified is almost beside the point.

Leadership is not judged only by facts established in courtrooms. It is also judged by public confidence.

Perception matters.

When enough people begin asking whether decisions are fair, transparent, and consistently applied, trust begins to erode. Even if many decisions were made in good faith, a growing perception of inconsistency can become as damaging as actual misconduct.

History teaches us that institutions rarely fail because of a single event.

They weaken when people gradually lose confidence that the rules apply equally to everyone.

Around the world, many supporters have voiced concerns about issues ranging from refereeing controversies to questions surrounding tournament administration. Others have defended FIFA, arguing that officiating errors are an unavoidable part of football and that extraordinary claims require strong evidence.

These differing views deserve to be heard.

What they should not become is an excuse to dismiss legitimate questions or to assume wrongdoing without evidence.

Football deserves better than polarization.

It deserves transparency.

It deserves accountability.

It deserves leadership that understands that every controversial decision is about more than one match. It affects the credibility of an institution that millions of children look up to and billions of adults invest their emotions in.

For many of us, particularly those whose nations have experienced colonialism, conflicts, or historical injustices, questions of fairness resonate deeply. We naturally pay close attention to whether powerful institutions apply rules consistently. That perspective deserves to be acknowledged respectfully, even as individual claims should be examined carefully and supported by evidence.

The World Cup has always represented hope.

It reminds humanity that competition can unite rather than divide.

That is why FIFA’s greatest responsibility is not merely organizing matches.

It is protecting trust.

If supporters across continents begin believing that football is no longer decided solely on the pitch, the greatest loss will not be one trophy or one tournament.

It will be the credibility of the game itself.

The solution is not despair.

Nor is it abandoning football.

The solution is stronger governance, greater transparency, independent accountability, and a renewed commitment to ensuring that every nation, large or small, is treated with equal dignity under the Laws of the Game.

The World Cup remains one of humanity’s greatest shared celebrations.

It is worth protecting.

Because when football loses the world’s trust, the world loses something much bigger than football.

... Read moreHaving followed multiple FIFA World Cups over the years, I’ve noticed that the tournament’s power to unite is truly unmatched—it transcends borders, languages, and cultures. Yet, recent controversies, especially those highlighted during the 2026 World Cup preparations, have cast a shadow on this unifying spirit. On several occasions, discussions on social media and among fans have centered not just on players' performances but on questionable refereeing decisions and inconsistent rule enforcement. From personal experience attending international matches, I’ve seen how these concerns affect fans’ faith in the fairness of the game. When the rules seem unevenly applied or when tournament logistics disadvantage certain teams, it creates a feeling of disillusionment. This perception of bias can quickly erode the collective joy football is supposed to bring. What resonates most with me is the call for leadership that embraces transparency and accountability. Sports, like any institution, thrive on trust—not just from players but from millions globally who invest emotionally. I believe independent oversight bodies could be vital in ensuring decisions are fair and transparent, diminishing suspicions of favoritism. Moreover, embracing the diversity of football’s global audience means recognizing the historical and cultural contexts that color how different communities perceive fairness. For example, fans and nations that have experienced historic injustices often watch closely for equitable treatment within FIFA’s governance. Ultimately, the World Cup’s essence lies in being a beacon of hope and unity. Protecting this requires more than just skillful play; it demands courageous leadership willing to confront uncomfortable questions and uphold the values of fair play and justice consistently. Only then can FIFA continue its legacy as a tournament that truly unites the world.
