Reasons to baby wear
There are so many great benefits of baby wearing here are my favorite ones!
-My hands can be free while holding my baby, I am able to do my day to day things while keeping him close
-Improves bonding, babies bond by being held, all they knew for 9 months was closeness of their mama, baby wearing keeps that bond
-Improves breastfeeding, having your baby close to you constantly sends signals to your brain to help produce more milk
-Dad and older siblings can also baby wear, my oldest loves to carry her baby brother around in his carriers
-Naptime, my son will not nap unless someone is holding him, but that can become hard when you have stuff to do, baby wearing can help with contact napping and you also get to have your hands free
When I first started my babywearing journey, I was a little overwhelmed by all the options out there. I knew I wanted to keep my baby close, but I also needed my hands free to manage daily life – whether it was making dinner or just wrangling my older kids. I remember seeing a friend with a beautiful mushroom-patterned carrier, and it sparked my curiosity about the different 'ways to hold a baby' using carriers. It turns out, babywearing isn't just one thing; it's a whole world of possibilities, each offering unique benefits for both parent and baby. Here are a few types of carriers I explored and what I loved about them: 1. Stretchy Wraps: These were my go-to for the newborn phase. They’re essentially long pieces of fabric that you wrap around yourself, creating a snug, womb-like environment for your little one. The closeness you get with a colorful wrap, like one I saw another mom using, is incredible for bonding. My baby felt so secure against me, and it really did help with contact naps – he’d just drift off, and I could still move around the house. The fabric distributes weight evenly, making it super comfortable for long periods, but there's definitely a learning curve to tying them correctly! 2. Ring Slings: Oh, the ring sling! This was fantastic for quick ups and downs. It’s a piece of fabric with two rings sewn at one end, which you thread the fabric through to create a pouch. I found it perfect for hip carries as my baby got a bit older and wanted to see the world. It was so easy to pop him in and out for errands or when he just wanted a quick cuddle. It’s a stylish option too, and I appreciated how compact it was to carry in my bag. 3. Soft Structured Carriers (SSCs): These became a staple once my baby had good head and neck control. They’re like a backpack for your baby, with buckles and adjustable straps. I noticed friends and even my husband using green carriers or light green carriers that were SSCs. They offer fantastic ergonomic support for both the wearer and the baby, which is crucial for longer walks or hikes. What I absolutely loved about SSCs is how easily my husband and even my older daughter could use them – she adored carrying her baby brother in one! They often allow for front, hip, and back carries, making them incredibly versatile as your baby grows. The padded straps made all the difference for my shoulders on longer outings. Choosing the right carrier really depends on your lifestyle, your baby's age, and what you plan to do while wearing them. Some days I needed the hands-free freedom of an SSC to get chores done, and other days the cozy closeness of a wrap was exactly what we both needed for bonding and naptime. Exploring these different ways to hold and carry my baby truly enriched our journey together, making everyday tasks manageable and creating countless precious memories.
