What I’m doing this summer as a Pre-Med Student

2024/7/23 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, fellow pre-meds, let's talk summer! The pressure to be productive is real, right? But after juggling classes all year, it's crucial to find that sweet spot between staying sharp and actually enjoying your break. When people ask 'what should pre-med students do in the summer,' my first thought is always: whatever helps you thrive! Beyond my beloved human body coloring book – which, by the way, is a fantastic, low-stress way to review anatomy – I've found a few key areas to focus on that make me feel prepared without burning out. Academically, summer is an ideal time to solidify those foundational sciences. Maybe it's reviewing biochemistry notes or tackling a tricky organic chemistry concept you struggled with during the semester. Some friends dive deep into MCAT prep, while others take an online course in a subject they find fascinating but didn't have room for in their regular schedule. The goal isn't to take a full course load, but to keep your brain engaged and reinforce learning in a way that feels sustainable. But it's not all about textbooks! This is where hobbies and personal well-being come into play – and trust me, they’re just as vital. For me, staying active outdoors is my go-to. If I can hit the waves for surfing, rally on the volleyball court, or challenge a friend to a game of tennis, I feel so much more refreshed. These activities aren't just fun; they're incredible stress-busters and help maintain a healthy mind-body balance. Plus, they remind you that there's life outside of textbooks! Think about what genuinely recharges you, whether it's exploring nature, diving into a creative project, or learning a new skill. These moments of joy prevent burnout and make you a more well-rounded applicant. Summer is also a prime opportunity for professional development experiences. Volunteering, especially in a clinical setting like a hospital or free clinic, offers invaluable exposure to patient care and helps you understand the realities of medicine. Shadowing physicians in different specialties can clarify your interests and provide incredible insights. Many pre-meds also seek out research opportunities, which can be a deeply rewarding way to contribute to scientific discovery and enhance your critical thinking skills. Even a part-time job that develops your communication or teamwork abilities can be beneficial. It's about finding experiences that genuinely resonate with your goals and allow you to explore the medical field responsibly. Ultimately, a successful pre-med summer isn't about doing *everything*, but about intentionally choosing activities that support your academic goals, personal growth, and mental health. Don't forget to schedule in some genuine downtime too – sleep, hanging out with friends and family, and simply relaxing are non-negotiable. Plan your summer with purpose, but also allow for spontaneity and self-care. It’s your journey, so make it a summer that truly works for you!
