Major Visceral Organs of the Body

You have learned that cavities accommodate organs and other structures; familiarize yourself with the organs these cavities house and protect. All humans have vital organs that are essential for survival. Each organ has a specific role that contributes to the overall well-being of the human body. A group of organs whose jobs are closely related are often referred to as a system.

BRAIN

❗️The brain is the control center of the nervous system, located within the skull. Its functions include muscle control and coordination, sensory reception and integration, speech production, memory storage, and the elaboration of thought and emotion.

LUNGS

❗️Two sponge-like structures that fill most of the chest cavity are the lungs. Their essential function is to provide oxygen from inhaled air to the bloodstream and to exhale carbon dioxide.

LIVER

❗️The liver lies largely on the right side of the abdominal cavity beneath the diaphragm. Its main functions are to process the contents of the blood and to break down fats, produce urea, filter harmful substances, and maintain a proper level of glucose in the blood.

BLADDER

❗️The bladder is a fibromuscular organ located in the pelvic cavity. It stretches to store urine and contracts to release urine.

KIDNEYS

❗️The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located at the back of the abdominal cavity, one on each side of the spinal column. Their function is to maintain the body's chemical balance by excreting waste products and excess fluid in the form of urine.

HEART

❗️The heart is a hollow, muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels by repeated, rhythmic contractions.

STOMACH

❗️The stomach is a muscular, elastic, pear-shaped bag, lying crosswise in the abdominal cavity beneath the diaphragm. Its main purpose is digestion of food through production of gastric juices.

INTESTINES

❗️The intestines are located between the stomach and the anus and divided into two major sections: the small intestine and the large intestine. The function of the small intestine is to absorb most ingested food. The large intestine is responsible for absorption of water and excretion of solid waste material.

... Read moreHey everyone! I recently dove into learning about the amazing powerhouse organs inside us, often called visceral organs, and wanted to share some extra insights beyond just what they are and where they live. It's truly mind-blowing how interconnected everything is! While knowing each organ's individual role, like the brain controlling everything or the heart pumping blood, is super important, I've found it even more fascinating to understand how they team up. For instance, your heart and lungs aren't just standalone parts; they form your cardiovascular and respiratory systems, working together seamlessly to get oxygen to every cell. And think about your stomach and intestines – they’re a dynamic duo in the digestive system, breaking down food and absorbing nutrients. Understanding these 'systems' really paints a bigger picture of how your body maintains balance and keeps you healthy. Beyond just knowing their names, I've started thinking about how to keep these vital organs happy. For example, did you know staying properly hydrated is crucial for your kidneys and bladder to efficiently filter waste? Or that a balanced diet supports your liver in detoxifying and your stomach/intestines in digestion? Simple choices like regular exercise can strengthen your heart and lungs, and even mental well-being plays a huge role in brain health. It's really empowering to realize how much control we have over supporting these incredible internal workers. To make learning even more engaging, especially for those visual learners like me, I've even started using a human body coloring book! It’s like a fun 'day 5 Color With Me!' activity, where I can physically color in the organs and better visualize their positions and relationships. It’s made the whole process much clearer than just reading text. Feeling your heart beat or your stomach rumble after a meal suddenly makes so much more sense when you know the intricate processes happening inside. I hope these extra thoughts add a layer of understanding to the incredible world of our visceral organs. It's a journey of discovery, and the more we learn, the better we can care for our bodies. What's one thing you've learned about your organs that surprised you?
