the PERFECT summer read ☀️

I am currently reading "The Guncle Abroad" by Steven Rowley... AS I TRAVEL ABROAD! We are heading to Germany for a few weeks, and there's something so special about saving a book for the perfect occasion. ✈️🧳📖

[BOOK SYNOPSIS]

"Patrick O’Hara is back. It’s been five years since his summer as his niece Maisie and nephew Grant’s caretaker after their mother’s passing. The kids are back in Connecticut with their dad, and Patrick has relocated to New York to remain close by and relaunch his dormant acting career. After the run of his second successful sit-com comes to a close, Patrick feels on top of the world . . . professionally. But some things have had to take a back seat. Looking down both barrels at fifty, Patrick is single again after breaking things off with Emory. But at least he has a family to lean on. Until that family needs to again lean on him.

When Patrick's brother, Greg, announces he’s getting remarried in Italy, Maisie and Grant are not thrilled. Patrick feels drawn to take the two back under his wing. As they travel through Europe on their way to the wedding, Patrick tries his best to help them understand love, much as he once helped them comprehend grief. But when they arrive in Italy, Patrick is overextended managing a groom with cold feet; his sister, Clara, flirting with guests left and right; a growing rivalry with the kids’ charming soon-to-be-launt (lesbian aunt), and two moody young teens trying to adjust to a new normal, all culminating in a disastrous rehearsal dinner.

Can Patrick save the day? Will teaching the kids about love help him repair his own love life? Can the change of scenery help Patrick come to terms with finally growing up?

Gracing the work with his signature blend of humor and heart, Steven Rowley charms with a beloved story about the complicated bonds of family, love, and what it takes to rediscover yourself, even at the ripe age of fifty."

... Read moreIf you're anything like me, finding that perfect book to whisk you away on your summer adventures (whether real or armchair!) is a top priority. And let me tell you, 'The Guncle Abroad' by Steven Rowley absolutely hits the mark. This isn't just a book you read; it's an experience that truly embodies those 'SUMMER VIBES' we all crave. While the story takes protagonist Patrick O'Hara and his niece and nephew on a whirlwind European trip to Italy, Germany, and beyond, its appeal goes far beyond just the picturesque settings. It's the journey of self-discovery, complex family bonds, and navigating life's unexpected turns that makes it such a compelling read, especially when you're seeking a story that feels both lighthearted and deeply touching. It's the kind of literary fiction that transports you, makes you laugh, and might even bring a tear to your eye. Rowley has a remarkable knack for blending laugh-out-loud humor with moments that are 'FULL OF ALL THE HEART AND FEELS.' You'll find yourself chuckling at Patrick's witty observations and relatable struggles, then unexpectedly tearing up at the genuine connections he forms with his family. The way he tries to guide Maisie and Grant through their own emotional landscapes, while dealing with his own midlife crisis and the chaos of a destination wedding, creates a dynamic that’s both hilarious and incredibly poignant. Beyond the surface-level travelogue, 'The Guncle Abroad' delves into profound themes of chosen family, the complexities of love at different ages, and the courage it takes to redefine yourself. Watching Patrick, at fifty, grapple with his past relationships and future aspirations while trying to keep a wedding (and his sanity) intact, is incredibly engaging. It reminds us that growth isn't just for the young; it's a lifelong process that can lead to unexpected joy and understanding. And for those who enjoy immersive storytelling, this book doesn't disappoint. The prose is sharp, witty, and evocative, making it easy to get lost in the European scenery and the characters' inner worlds. I've even heard from many fellow readers that this book is 'BETTER ON AUDIO' for an even more engaging experience, making it an ideal companion for long drives, flights, or even just a warm afternoon picnic. Imagine listening to Patrick's adventures unfold as you embark on your own! So, if you're looking for a book that offers both an escape and a heartwarming reflection on life, love, and the beautiful messiness of family, definitely give 'The Guncle Abroad' a spot on your reading list. It’s truly a standout, perfect for those long summer days or any time you need a generous dose of 'SUMMER VIBES' and a story that leaves you feeling good about the world.
