Do you “break in” your books?

Do you break in your books? I believe there are different ways to do it, but I begin by grabbing a few pages and pushing them down. Then, I grab a couple of pages from each side of the book to make it even and press down to flatten each side and position the middle section in the middle. Then, I continue taking a couple more pages until I reach the middle. Then, I close my book and check on the spine!

I've seen people do it on TikTok and just started doing it myself! Have you ever done this, or would you try it? Are there any techniques that work the best?

... Read moreHey bookworms! So, we've talked about my go-to method for breaking in books, but let's dive deeper into why this little ritual is so important and explore a few other ways you can do it. When I first heard about 'breaking in' a new book, I thought it was just a quirky habit some readers had. But after trying it myself, especially with a new release like Survive the Night by Riley Sager, I totally get it! First off, why bother? A properly broken-in book is just so much more comfortable to read. You know that feeling when you first open a brand new paperback or hardcover, and the spine is stiff, making it hard to keep the pages flat? It can be super annoying and even cause strain on your hands. By gently conditioning the spine, you make it more flexible, allowing the book to lay flatter. This also helps prevent damage, like cracks and creases, which can happen if you force a stiff spine open too wide. It's all about preserving your beloved reads! While my original method focuses on gradually pushing pages from the outside in, there are other popular techniques. One common approach is the 'fan method.' Here's how you can try it: Hold the book upright with its spine resting on a flat surface. Open the front cover and press it gently down until it touches the surface. Repeat with the back cover. Then, take a small section of pages (about 10-20), halfway from the front, and press them down softly. Do the same for a section of pages from the back. Continue working your way towards the center, alternating between front and back sections, pressing each portion down gently. The key here is a *slow, continuous process*, applying gentle pressure to gradually relax the glue and paper. I've found this fan method particularly good for thicker hardcovers where the spine glue can be really stubborn. For smaller paperbacks, a simple gentle flex of the spine along its length before opening can sometimes be enough. A few tips from my own trial-and-error: Be patient: Don't rush it! Aggressively forcing pages down can actually damage the spine or loosen the binding. Think of it like stretching before a workout – slow and steady wins the race. Listen to your book: You'll feel the spine gradually becoming more pliable. Stop if you hear any tearing sounds. Avoid extreme flattening: While you want flexibility, don't try to flatten the book completely open to 180 degrees on its first go. Just aim for a comfortable open position. Consider the binding: Glued bindings (common in paperbacks) benefit most, but even stitched bindings on hardcovers can appreciate a gentle warm-up. Ultimately, 'breaking in a book' is about personal preference. Some readers love the pristine, untouched look of a new book, while others, like me, prefer a well-loved, flexible companion. What's your take? Have you tried these other methods, or do you have a unique trick up your sleeve? Let's keep the book chat going!
