Birth of Ganesh
A widespread legend says that Ganesha was born of Our Lady Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva. One day, Our Lady wanted to have someone to watch over herself when bathing, and used powder mixed with oil or turmeric to form a boy, and blew his breath to life. That is Ganesha. Then Our Lady ordered the doorstep to stop anyone from entering.
And when Shiva returned, Ganesha would not let in. And Shiva was angry, and there was a battle. And finally Shiva used a trident to cut off Ganesha's head. And the goddess Parvati was so sad that he threatened to destroy the earth. And Shiva commanded that the head of the first creature found be replaced by the first head. And the soldiers took the head of the elephant, and became Ganesha the head of the elephant.
