Emma and Dobby ready to garden
It's truly 'Time to garden with the pups' at my place, and I wouldn't have it any other way! My two adorable Cocker Spaniels, Emma and Dobby, make every outdoor session an adventure. There’s something incredibly special about having your furry best friends by your side as you tend to your plants. If you're wondering if a Cocker Spaniel is a good gardening partner, let me tell you from my experience – they absolutely are! Cocker Spaniels are naturally curious and have a wonderful zest for life. Their keen sense of smell means they love to explore every nook and cranny of the garden, often discovering hidden treasures (or at least, what they perceive as treasures!). They have a moderate energy level, meaning they enjoy a good run and play session, but are also happy to settle down nearby while you’re weeding. Just be prepared for some enthusiastic 'help' with digging – it's all part of their charm! I’ve found that giving them their own designated digging spot, perhaps a sandpit, can save your flowerbeds from unexpected excavations. To ensure gardening with your dogs is a joyful experience for everyone, a little preparation goes a long way. Firstly, always be mindful of pet-safe plants. Research common garden plants to identify any that might be toxic to dogs and either remove them or make them inaccessible. Keep all gardening tools, fertilizers, and pesticides securely stored away. I always do a quick sweep before letting Emma and Dobby loose to make sure there’s nothing harmful they can get into. Creating a dog-friendly garden doesn't mean sacrificing your green thumb. Consider pathways that are easy for paws, and perhaps raised beds to protect delicate plants from playful romps. Providing shaded areas is crucial, especially on warmer days, and always have fresh water available. After a session of 'helping' in the garden, those muddy paws are inevitable! I keep a designated towel by the door for quick clean-ups, which saves my floors and furniture later. Positive reinforcement training can also work wonders in teaching them which areas are off-limits and which are fair game for sniffing and playing. Beyond the practicalities, the most rewarding aspect of gardening with my pups is the bond it strengthens. There's a true sense of companionship as we spend time outdoors together, breathing in the fresh air. Their playful antics and unwavering enthusiasm bring so much joy and laughter to my day. It's a simple, pure connection that makes every moment in the garden feel more meaningful. Whether they're chasing a butterfly or just napping in a sunny spot nearby, their presence makes my garden feel like a truly happy place. It’s these shared moments that truly create an unbreakable bond, enriching both our lives in countless ways.
