Matthew 18:21-22

🌟 The Short Meaning

Never stop forgiving people. Do not count how many times.

📖 Simple Breakdown

Peter asked:"If someone hurts me, do I forgive them 7 times?"

Jesus answered: "No, not 7 times. Forgive them 77 times"

💡 What it really means

Jesus did not mean we should stop at 78. He meant: Do not keep score. Always forgive.

... Read moreI remember the first time I truly wrestled with Matthew 18:21-22. Like Peter, my immediate thought was, 'Surely there's a limit!' Seven times seemed generous enough, right? But then Jesus drops the bombshell: 'I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.' It wasn't about a literal tally, but an infinite well of forgiveness. This verse, for me, isn't just about absolving someone else; it's profoundly about freeing myself. Holding onto grudges, replaying hurts—it’s like drinking poison and expecting the other person to get sick. I've found that when I cling to resentment, it's my peace that suffers. The weight of unforgiveness can fuel my #anxiety and make me feel incredibly #depressed. Jesus' teaching here, about not keeping score, felt revolutionary. It's a call to release the burden, not necessarily to forget or to condone the harm, but to let go of the emotional chains binding me to the past hurt, especially when a brother or anyone else sins against me. But how do you actually forgive someone who has deeply wronged you, especially if they haven't apologized or seem unrepentant? This is where the wisdom of #God, and the power of the #HolySpirit, truly comes in. It's a process, not a one-time event. For me, it often starts with a prayer, acknowledging the pain and asking for the strength to release it. It doesn't mean I have to trust that person again immediately, or even stay in the same relationship if it's toxic, but it means I refuse to let their actions continue to dictate my inner peace. The 'seventy-seven times' isn't permission for others to continuously hurt us without consequence. Instead, it's a profound challenge to our own hearts. It asks us to cultivate a spirit of grace that mirrors the boundless forgiveness we receive from #God through #JesusChrist. When Peter asked, "Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?" he was looking for a boundary. Jesus, in His infinite wisdom, showed us that true freedom lies in removing those boundaries within ourselves. The scripture in Matthew 18:21-22 truly teaches us to extend grace without limit. I've learned that forgiveness isn't about letting someone off the hook; it's about taking myself off the hook of bitterness and anger. It’s a journey, sometimes a very painful one, but the peace that follows is incomparable. So, if you're struggling with a hurt today, remember Matthew 18:21-22. Don't count the offenses, count on the grace that empowers you to forgive, and watch how it transforms your own spirit.
