The sound of my unmedicated contractions and labor & delivery
(no epidural) 🩷 I can't believe it's been 3 months since our daughter was born!!! 🥹
Full transparency, because someone wanted to discredit my birth saying it wasn't unmedicated because I used nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to push.
Thad a completely unmedicated birth with my last baby and ended up having shoulder dystocia (a complication that can occur during vaginal delivery where the baby's shoulder gets stuck behind the mother's pelvic bone after the head is delivered) and it was traumatizing for me. (He weighed 9lbs 12oz) Thankfully it was very fast and my baby had minimal complications after but shoulder dystocia can be extremely dangerous for mom and baby...
I got an epidural with my first baby 12 years ago and I did not like the way it made me feel.
My last 2 births were completely unmedicated but after what happened with my last birth, l was sooooo anxious about pushing and having shoulder dystocia again. I decided that with this birth I wanted to use nitrous oxide after seeing @Labor_Junkie_RN share her experience using it for her birth. Not all hospitals offer it but since mine did, I thought I would try it)
It did NOT take the pain away and it did not make me feel "high"... It just helped me really focus on my breathing and not SCREAMING the baby out like I did when I had the shoulder dystocia.
I was calm, relaxed and able to listen to my body. I was induced so they started me on pitocin around 12:45pm and labored all day, trying different techniques to move my babies head lower so my midwife could safely break my water. She broke my water at 9:40pm and that's when the really uncomfortable contractions started...
When it was time to push, that's when I used the nitrous oxide. After 2 contractions, my baby girl was born
She weighed 9lbs 3oz
and I was able to push on all 4s instead of on my back!!
(my midwife and doula
recommended that's how I push and I am so glad I did it that way!)
Everything about my labor and delivery was amazing, even with being induced with pitocin. I had the best midwife, doula and nurses supporting me through everything and of course my amazing Husband by my side
ALL births are amazing. Women are amazing.
No matter how you brought your baby into this world, you should be proud of yourself 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
If you're wanting an unmedicated birth, you CAN do it!! ♥️
