How I Introduced Solids to my 6 Month Old

One of the things I was most nervous to tackle as a first time mom was transitioning my baby from purées to solid foods.

Eliza was always very interested in what we were eating, so we decided to start baby led weaning around 6 months. To my surprise, the adjustment was relatively smooth and really fun to experience!

I loved watching Eliza explore new foods, and determine what she liked and didn’t like. I remember giving her broccoli for the first time and she gnawed on the floret for a solid 10 minutes. There were definitely moments where she would gag, but that is her natural reflex at work! It was intimidating to me, fun for her, and completely normal for babies her age learning to eat for the first time.

When we first started, I would offer her steamed food. All veggies and most fruits would be steamed, and that made it easier for her to break the food down when attempting to eat her meal. I would also keep the food in big pieces! This allowed her to hold on to the food more easily, and she could bite off the exact amount she wanted.

Now that Payton is four months old, I can’t believe we will be starting this process again! I’m definitely excited to see which foods she gravitates to most 🍓🥑🍌🍎🧀

... Read moreStarting solids with my little one was such a memorable journey, and while my first article touched on our initial steps with baby-led weaning, there's so much more to share, especially for those curious about other options and specific foods! When my Eliza started at 6 months, her high chair became our little culinary playground. I remember seeing queries like 'baby eating broccoli high chair' pop up, and it really brought back memories of her first adventures with that green veggie! One thing that often comes up is the debate between BLW and purees. While we leaned heavily into BLW, it's totally okay to incorporate purees, especially for '6 month baby eating puree in high chair' parents. If you're offering purees, think about thicker, nutrient-dense options. You can even pre-load a spoon and hand it to your baby for them to self-feed, which still aligns with the baby-led approach. For instance, a thicker 'baby eating blueberry puree' could be an excellent way to introduce that sweet flavor while still letting them control the spoon. Just be sure the high chair is stable and secure for all feeding styles! Let's talk more about those first foods. Beyond broccoli, which Eliza absolutely adored (and still does!), many parents wonder about other safe options. For '6 month old eating broccoli,' remember to steam it until it's soft enough to mash between your fingers, but firm enough for your baby to grasp. Keep the florets large initially. Other fantastic choices include bananas – just peel off a portion and let them gnaw on it. Cucumbers, when offered as spears with the skin on (for grip) and the seedy core removed, are great for gumming. I know 'baby eating blueberries high chair' is a popular search; for these, it's crucial to smash them flat or cut them into quarters to prevent choking, especially at 6 months. We also introduced finely shredded or soft-cooked chicken, which was a huge hit. For things like bread, a thin strip of lightly toasted bread without the crust, or toast fingers with a thin spread of unsweetened avocado, can be fun. Remember the OCR mentioned Eliza loved apples and carrots too! These need to be very soft-steamed or roasted until easily mashed. Strawberries can be quartered or sliced into thin strips. The key is always to prepare foods in shapes and textures that are safe for tiny hands and mouths, ensuring they can grasp easily and that the food isn't a choking hazard. And for the 'baby starting solids 6 months high chair' setup, comfort and safety are paramount. Make sure your baby is sitting upright, feet supported, and fully engaged. It's a messy process, so embrace it! Lay down a mat, have a wipe-down cloth ready, and remember that gagging is a natural reflex, not necessarily choking. It's a learning curve for both of you. Don't stress too much about how much they eat initially; it's more about exploration and developing those crucial oral motor skills. Every 'feed' is an adventure!
