How Do I Get My Baby To Start Sitting + Crawling?

Encouraging your baby to sit and crawl independently involves creating a safe and stimulating environment. Staying consistent with the following steps will help your little one get interested in moving and grooving all on their own!

🚼start by placing toys just out of

reach to encourage reaching and crawling

🚼use pillows or cushions to create a soft landing area for practice. A cushioned floor mat works well, too

🚼 provide plenty of supervised tummy time to help strengthen the muscles needed for sitting and crawling. I recommend doing tummy time at least twice daily to give them ample opportunity to practice

🚼 praise and encouragement also go a long way in motivating your baby’s efforts! Cheering them on will put the biggest grin on their little face

Your baby will reach these milestones soon enough. After all, practice makes perfect!

... Read moreAs a mom, I know how exciting and sometimes challenging it can be to watch your baby reach those big developmental milestones like sitting up and starting to crawl. When my little one was getting ready, I spent so much time looking for practical 'mom tips on how to encourage your baby to start' moving more independently. I wanted to share some of the methods that worked wonders for us, especially when it came to using everyday items to make practice fun and safe. One of the biggest game-changers for us was incorporating pillows and cushions into our play. For supported sitting practice, I'd often create a cozy little nest for my baby on the floor using a few firm pillows around them. This gave them the stability they needed to focus on strengthening their core muscles without me constantly holding them. It was amazing to see their confidence grow as they learned to balance! When they were ready for a bit more of a challenge, I’d place a single pillow behind them or slightly to one side, encouraging them to use their own strength to stay upright. This gentle support is key for mastering sitting without extra stress. Then came the crawling phase, and those same pillows became fantastic props! To encourage them to start moving, I'd strategically place a couple of cushions or small pillows on the floor, creating a mini-obstacle course. This wasn't about making it difficult, but rather giving them something interesting to navigate. Watching my baby crawling over pillows or exploring around them really helped them understand how to coordinate their hands and knees. Sometimes, I’d even drape a blanket over a pillow to create a tiny "tunnel" – they loved peeking through, which motivated them to push forward. And of course, toys are an absolute must! To encourage reaching and forward movement, I'd often place their favorite bright, noisy toys just out of reach. This wasn't to frustrate them, but to spark that natural curiosity and desire to grab. For 'baby reaching toy crawling practice,' I’d put a toy a foot or two away, letting them stretch and wiggle their way towards it. It helps them build those important arm and leg muscles. Similarly, for 'baby reaching for toy sitting,' I'd place toys slightly to their side, encouraging them to twist and reach, which strengthens their oblique muscles and improves balance. The transition from sitting to crawling (and vice versa!) is another fascinating stage. I found that having a safe, clear space was essential. When my baby was sitting, I'd place toys around them, encouraging them to pivot and turn to reach. This naturally led to them leaning forward onto their hands, which is the perfect precursor to crawling. For the move from crawling to sitting, I'd sometimes place a toy slightly above them while they were on all fours, prompting them to push up and back into a sitting position. Remember, every baby is different, and some might spend more time perfecting one skill before moving to the next. The key is consistent, supervised practice and, as always, lots of praise and encouragement. Seeing their little face light up when they finally grab that toy or push themselves into a sit is the best reward!
